Marapi River
The Marapi (Jawi alphabet, Jawi: ماراڤي), or Mount Marapi (, , Jawi alphabet, Jawi: ڬونوواڠ ماراڤي), is a complex volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia, and is the most active volcano in Sumatra. Like that of its Mount Merapi, quasi-homonym on Java, its name means "Mountain of Fire". Its elevation is . Several cities and towns are situated around the mountain including Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang, and Batusangkar. The volcano is also popular among hikers. Mythology According to legend, the mountain is the site first settled by the Minangkabau people after their ship landed on the mountain when it was the size of an egg and surrounded by water. There are large numbers of upright burial stones in the region which are oriented in the direction of the mountain, indicating its cultural significance. West Sumatra () is a Provinces of Indonesia, province of Indonesia. It is on the west coast of the island of Sumatra and includes the Mentawai Islands off that coast. A lahar (, from ) is a violent type of mudflow or debris flow composed of a slurry of pyroclastic material, rocky debris and water. The material flows down from a volcano, typically along a river valley. Lahars are often extremely destructive and deadly; they can flow tens of metres per second, they have been known to be up to deep, and large flows tend to destroy any structures in their path. Notable lahars include those at Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines and Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia, the latter of which killed more than 20,000 people in the Armero tragedy. 2024 West Sumatra Floods
Beginning on 11 May 2024, heavy rain caused flash floods and lahars in West Sumatra, Indonesia, killing at least 67 people and leaving 20 more missing. More than 4,000 people were also displaced. The regencies of Agam and Tanah Datar were most affected. Events Hours of heavy monsoon rains caused flash flooding at around 22:30 WIB (15:30 UTC) on 11 May, exacerbated by a lahar from Mount Marapi. The rains also caused a river to overflow and flood villages in four districts. The lahar swept down Mount Marapi, carrying a wet mixture of ash and rocks. It buried homes and swept some residents away. Damage and casualties At least 67 people died, 44 were injured and 20 remained missing. Among the dead included 22 in Agam Regency (19 of them in Canduang), 29 in Tanah Datar, 12 in Padang Pariaman, two in Padang Panjang and two in Padang. Minangkabau International Airport
Minangkabau International Airport is an airport serving the province of West Sumatra on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located at Ketaping, Padang Pariaman Regency which is about 23 km north-west of Padang, Indonesia, Padang city center. The airport commenced operations in July 2005 and took over the role previously held by Sutan Sjahrir Air Force Base, Tabing Airport in Padang, which now serves exclusively as a military airbase for the Indonesian Air Force. The former airport could not be expanded due to limited land availability and had become increasingly congested as passenger numbers grew, leading to the decision to construct a new facility. Volcanic Earthquake
A volcano tectonic earthquake or volcano earthquake is caused by the movement of magma beneath the surface of the Earth. The movement results in pressure changes where the rock around the magma has a change in stress. At some point, this stress can cause the rock to break or move. This seismic activity is used by scientists to monitor volcanoes. The earthquakes may also be related to dike intrusion and/or occur as earthquake swarms. Usually they are characterised by high seismic frequency and lack the pattern of a main shock followed by a decaying aftershock distribution of fault related tectonic earthquakes.
