Maranatha!
Maranatha! Music is a Christian music record label which was founded as a nonprofit ministry of Calvary Chapel in 1971. The label is distributed by Capitol Christian Music Group, a division of Universal Music. Background In the early 1970s Calvary Chapel was home to more than 15 musical groups that were representative of the Jesus movement. In 1971, Maranatha! Music was founded as a nonprofit outreach of Calvary Chapel to popularize and promote a new, folk-rock style of hymns and worship songs influenced by the Jesus people. Some of the early Maranatha! recording groups were Sweet Comfort Band, Love Song, Chuck Girard, Children of the Day, The Way, Debby Kerner, Mustard Seed Faith, Karen Lafferty, and Daniel Amos. The Way (band)
The Way was a Jesus music band who were active from 1971 to 1976. They released two albums on Maranatha! Records and contributed four non-LP tracks to their label's compilation series and one LP track was pulled for the first label retrospective. History The first recordings by The Way appeared on the Maranatha! compilation albums, ''The Everlastin' Living Jesus Music Concert'' with the song "If You Will Believe", and ''Maranatha! 2'' with "Jesus Is the One" and "Jesus Is All that We Need". Their self-titled debut album was recorded at Buddy King Studios in Huntington Beach. It was self-produced and had a smooth mixture of folk and country rock that reminds the listener of America. Debby Kerner & Ernie Rettino are American musicians best known as the creators of the characters from the Psalty the Singing Songbook in the Kids' Praise! series of Christian children's musical albums. Together, they have also created Solomon the Supersonic Salamander, and '' Hi-Tops'' (a musical for pre-teens and teens). Kerner started off as a solo Christian singer in 1969. She and Rettino met at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in Southern California, where she led worship. They have been making music together since the mid-1970s. They were married in 1976 and named the album they released that year "More Than Friends". In 1979, the duo created a cartoon character for children by the name of Psalty the Singing Songbook. Psalty was introduced in the "Kids Praise" Series, which was produced by Maranatha! Music between 1980 and 1991. In 2006, Kerner became Director of Worship Leadership at Saddleback Church; she trains and mentors worship leaders and oversees venues at the church's ... Sweet Comfort Band
Sweet Comfort Band was an American Christian rock band that first performed in 1973 in Riverside, California, and were active until 1984. The band was initially composed of keyboardist/lead vocalist, Bryan Duncan, and brothers Kevin (bass guitar) and Rick (drums/vocals) Thomson. The band was the brainchild of the Thomson brothers. Randy Thomas, guitarist/vocalist joined the group around 1976. After their second album, Sweet Comfort Band also became well known for their highly detailed, airbrushed album cover art by Kerne Erickson, a trend that had previously been considered too costly for Christian groups who did not produce the high-volume album sales of mainstream bands such as Kansas. Daniel Amos
Daniel Amos (aka D. A., Dä) is an American Christian rock band formed in 1974 by Terry Scott Taylor on guitars and vocals, Marty Dieckmeyer on bass guitar, Steve Baxter on guitars and Jerry Chamberlain on lead guitars. The band currently consists of Taylor, guitarist Greg Flesch and drummer Ed McTaggart. Over the band's career, they have included keyboardist Mark Cook, drummer Alex MacDougall, bassist Tim Chandler and keyboardist Rob Watson with sounds that experimented with country rock, rock, new wave and alternative rock. Beginnings The roots of Daniel Amos began to grow out of Jubal's Last Band, an acoustic quartet consisting of Taylor, Kenny Paxton, Chuck Starnes and Steve Baxter, who spent their time performing for Bible study groups and at coffee shops throughout Southern California. Terry Clark (Christian Musician)
Terry Clark (born September 22, 1946) is an American Christian music singer and songwriter. He is a pioneer of the Jesus music genre, later to be called contemporary Christian music. Biography Clark is a native of San Diego. Though raised in a Christian home, as a young man he began sampling many lifestyles. A tour of duty with the military in Southeast Asia (1968–1971) left him with severe post traumatic stress. As a result, he pushed away from reality. In that condition, he experienced a powerful glimpse of God's love for him. He recounts: "Jesus said 'Terry, I know how you feel—I've seen everything human beings have ever done--but I want you to understand the difference in our response to that. You've decided not to be a human being and I've decided to become one.'" An overwhelming sense of God's love began a transformation in his life. Mustard Seed Faith was an American Jesus music group from Costa Mesa, California. Mustard Seed Faith was one of several groups formed by members of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in the late 1960s and early 1970s; others included Daniel Amos and Sweet Comfort Band. Mustard Seed Faith's first releases were songs on Maranatha! Karen Lafferty
Karen Lafferty (born February 29, 1948) is an American Contemporary Christian musician from Alamogordo, New Mexico. Lafferty graduated from Eastern New Mexico University and unsuccessfully attempted to join a Campus Crusade for Christ musical ensemble shortly after.Mark Allan Powell, ''Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music''. Calvary Chapel
Calvary Chapel is an association of evangelical churches, maintains a number of radio stations around the world and operates many local Calvary Chapel Bible College programs. Beginning in 1965 in Southern California, this fellowship of churches grew out of Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. History The association has its origins in the founding of a Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (California) in 1965 by pastor Chuck Smith of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel with 25 people. Love Song (band)
Love Song was one of the most prominent Jesus music bands, and one of the first Christian rock bands. They released two studio albums—''Love Song'' (1972) and ''Final Touch'' (1974)—and one live album—''Feel the Love'' (1977)—before disbanding. They subsequently released ''Welcome Back'' in 1994, remastered versions of the three early albums and ''Love Song: The Book of Love'' as a box set in 2010. Background Love Song was founded in 1970 by Chuck Girard, Tommy Coomes, Jay Truax, and Fred Field, prior to the conversion of any of the band members. Field and Truax were the first two to convert to Christianity and began attending a bible study at Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel where the other two eventually "accepted Jesus".
