Thorold
Thorold is a city in Ontario, Canada, located on the Niagara Escarpment. It is also the seat of the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The Welland Canal passes through the city, featuring lock 7 and the Twin Flight Locks. History The first survey of Thorold, or Township 9 as it was known then, occurred in 1788. The earliest communities in what is now Thorold emerged at Beaverdams, DeCew Falls and St. Johns. In 1846, the community had a population of about 1,000 and there were three churches or chapels and a post office. Various types of tradesmen worked here. Industry included two grist mills, a cement mill, a brewery and three wagon makers. There were seven taverns. Thorold, located on the brow of the Niagara Escarpment, soon became dominant and was incorporated as a village in 1850. Its formation was linked to the creation of the First Welland Canal. Maplehurst is a town in Taylor County, Wisconsin, Taylor County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 359 at the 2000 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93.1 km2), of which, 35.9 square miles (93.0 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.06%) is water. The northwest corner of Maplehurst lies in the hilly terminal moraine that runs from Westboro, Wisconsin, Westboro through Perkinstown, Wisconsin, Perkinstown and Lublin, Wisconsin, Lublin. That land is choppy because it has had only about 15,000 years to level out since it was dumped by the Wisconsin glaciation, last glacier. Maplehurst Correctional Complex
Maplehurst Correctional Complex () is a correctional facility located in Milton, Ontario for women and men 18 years of age and older. It is a combined maximum security detention centre for remanded prisoners, and medium/maximum correctional centre for offenders sentenced to less than two years. It used to have a separate wing for minors (12 to 17 years of age) but no longer houses them. It is also known colloquially as the "Milton Hilton" or "Muppethurst". History In 1972, the government started a $13.6 million construction project for the Maplehurst Correctional Centre. It was completed in 1974 and continues to operate to this day. Sod was turned on the project on February 9, 1973. Maplehurst Correctional Complex was built in the mid-1970s as a replacement for several older facilities including the Milton Jail, Halton County Jail, and the Mimico Correctional Centre, although the latter ultimately remained open.
