It is the leading insurance company in Spain and the largest non-life insurance company in Latin America. The company purchased Webster, Massachusetts-based Commerce Insurance Group, a major provider of vehicle insurance, for over €1.5 billion in October 2007. Ignacio Hernando de Larramendi y Montiano (1921–2001) was a Spanish entrepreneur, Carlist militant and author. Larramendi was as a longtime head of MAPFRE and is often counted among 100 most influential Spanish businessmen of the 20th century. He is recognized as sponsor and organizer of multifold initiatives related to Hispanic culture, mostly in Latin America. Mapfre Middlesea plc (stylized as MAPFRE; previously Middlesea Insurance) is a Maltese insurance company headquartered in Floriana. As well as the United Kingdom, InsureandGo also has operations in the Republic of Ireland and Australia.
