Manzano Peak
Manzano Peak is the highest peak in the Manzano Mountains, a mountain range in the central part of the US State of New Mexico. It lies southwest of the town of Manzano, New Mexico, Manzano and east-southeast of the town of Belen, New Mexico, Belen, in the Manzano Wilderness Area, part of the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest. It forms the striking southern anchor of the range, rising in above its western base. The summit is below the tree line, but has views to the east, south, and west. Manzano Peak can be accessed via trail number 80 (the Kayser Trail), leading to the Crest Trail (number 170), from a trailhead on the east side of the range. Manzano Mountains
The Manzano Mountains are a small mountain range in the central part of the US State of New Mexico. They are oriented north–south and are 30 miles long. The center of the range lies due east of the town of Belen. Belén (; es, Belén) is the second most populous city in Valencia County, New Mexico, United States, after its county seat, Los Lunas. The population was 7,360 at the 2020 Census. Belén is Spanish for Bethlehem but gained the nickname "The Hub City". Manzano Wilderness
Manzano Mountain Wilderness is a designated Wilderness Area within the Cibola National Forest, located about 50 miles (80 km) south-southeast of Albuquerque. It is located in western Torrance County and eastern Valencia County. The Wilderness area includes (58 sq. mi) with elevations ranging from to at Manzano Peak. History The Manzano Mountain Wilderness area was created in 1978 as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Manzano means "apple" in Spanish. Cibola National Forest
The Cibola National Forest (pronounced SEE-bo-lah) is a 1,633,783 acre (6,611.7 km2) United States National Forest in New Mexico, USA. The name Cibola is thought to be the original Zuni Indian name for their pueblos or tribal lands. The name was later interpreted by the Spanish to mean "buffalo." The forest is disjointed with lands spread across central and northern New Mexico, west Texas and Oklahoma. The tree line is the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing. It is found at high elevations and high latitudes. Beyond the tree line, trees cannot tolerate the environmental conditions (usually cold temperatures, extreme snowpack, or associated lack of available moisture).
