Manzanita Butter Clump
''Pachycudonia spathulata'', commonly known as Manzanita butter clumps, is a rare and little-known fungus that grows in association with manzanita and Arbutus menziesii, Pacific madrone trees on the west coast of North America. This fungus was first described in 1942 by Sanshi Imai as ''Cudonia spathulata'' and renamed by Imai in 1950 to ''Pachycudonia spathulata''. Mycologists are investigating the range of this fungus and seeking new observations and specimen collections. Notes References

Edwin Butterworth Mains
Edwin Butterworth Mains (1890–1968) was an American mycologist. He was known for his taxonomic research on the rust fungi (Pucciniomycetes), the genus '' Cordyceps'', and the earth tongues ( Geoglossaceae). Biography Edwin Butterworth Mains was born on 31 March 1890 in Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. The son of Benjamin W. and Mary Ann (Butterworth) Mains. Mains began his undergraduate education at Michigan State University in 1909, but transferred to the University of Michigan in 1911. He earned his Ph.D. in botany from the University of Michigan in 1916 under the tutelage of Calvin Henry Kauffman while investigating the parasite-host relationships of various rust fungi. He was appointed Assistant Botanist at the Purdue University Agricultural Experimental Station by Joseph Charles Arthur in 1916. Manzanita
Manzanita is a common name for many species of the genus '' Arctostaphylos''. They are evergreen shrubs or small trees present in the chaparral biome of western North America, where they occur from Southern British Columbia and Washington to Oregon, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in the United States, and throughout Mexico. Manzanitas can live in places with poor soil and little water. They are characterized by smooth orange or red bark and stiff, twisting branches. There are 107 species and subspecies of manzanita, 95 of which are found in the Mediterranean climate and colder mountainous regions of California, ranging from ground-hugging coastal and mountain species to small trees up to 20 feet (6m) tall.
