Manung Kangjeibung
The Manung Kangjeibung () () is an old polo field located to the south west of the citadel inside the Kangla Fort in Imphal West district of Manipur. In ancient times, only royalties and nobilities were allowed to play the game of polo () in this royal playground. It is one of the two most ancient pologrounds in the world, the other one being the :simple:Imphal Polo Ground, Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Polo Ground). Etymology In Meitei language (officially called Manipuri language), "manung" () means "inside" or "inner side". The Meitei language, Meitei term "kāngjeibung" () means polo field, pologround (polo field). Ningthouja Dynasty
The Ningthouja dynasty, also known as Mangang dynasty, comprises the descendants of the kings of Manipur. Ningthouja literally means progeny of King (''Ningthou'' means king and ''cha'' or ''macha'' means progeny in which ''ja'' is a corrupted word of cha). It has 125 extended families. It was founded by King Nongdā Lāiren Pākhangba in 33 CE. History By the beginning of the 1st millennium CE, the Ningthouja Dynasty began to emerge in Imphal River valley, overrunning the territory of the Khaba clan. They established Kangla as their seat of power. From Kangla they absorbed the surrounding clan principalities of Luwang, Moirang, Khaba-Nganba, Angom, Sarang-Leishangthem and Khuman. Polo
Polo is a stick and ball game that is played on horseback as a traditional field sport. It is one of the world's oldest known team sports, having been adopted in the Western world from the game of Chovgan (), which originated in ancient Iran, dating back over 2,000 years. Initially played by Persian nobility as a training exercise for cavalry units, polo eventually spread to other parts of the world. The game is played by two opposing teams with the objective of scoring using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team's goal. Nongthombam Biren Singh ( Meitei pronunciation: /nōng-thōm-bam bī-ren sīng/; born 1 January 1961) is an Indian politician, former footballer and journalist who served as the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur from 2017 to 2025 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has represented the Heingang Assembly constituency in the Manipur Legislative Assembly since 2002. Besides being the chairman of Shri Shri Govindaji Temple Board, he is the first incumbent Chief Minister who serves as the president of the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB), the temple development board of Lainingthou Sanamahi of the Sanamahi religion since 2021. PuYa
The Puyas are archaic Manipuri manuscripts. They encompass a wide spectrum of themes including genealogy, literature, history, royalties, administration, creation and cosmology, philosophy, poetry, religious beliefs, etc. Saroj Parratt noted in 2005 that none of these Puyas were yet to be dated by professional historians or subject to serious textual-critical scrutiny. Consequently, she criticized the tendency of local authors to treat puyas as reliable sources in their reconstruction of Manipuri history. Scholars have noted that puyas had been forged by Meitei nationalists to support their reinvention of history and tradition. Meitei (; ) also known as Manipuri ), is a Tibeto-Burman language of northeast India.
