Manuel Maloof
Manuel Joseph Maloof (May 10, 1924–August 7, 2004) was the Chief Executive Officer and Commission Chairman of DeKalb County, Georgia, prominent Atlanta politician and owner of Manuel's Tavern, a popular Atlanta bar. Early life Manuel Maloof was born in Atlanta, his parents were Gibran Mansour (William M) "Brown" Maloof and Lillian Shikany Maloof. He was the second of seven children. His father emigrated to the U.S. from Kafarakab, Lebanon in 1907; his mother was born in Savannah to Lebanese parents from Zahle, Lebanon. After graduating from Midtown High School (Atlanta), Tech High School he served in World War II as an Army Air Forces mechanic and mess sergeant. While stationed in England he met his wife, Dolly Green. In 1956 Maloof purchased Harry's Delicatessen on Highland Avenue, just outside DeKalb County, later transforming it to Manuel's Tavern which is still in operation. DeKalb County, Georgia
DeKalb County (, , ) is located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 764,382, making it Georgia's fourth-most populous county. Its county seat is Decatur. DeKalb County is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It contains roughly 10% of the city of Atlanta (the other 90% lies in Fulton County). DeKalb is primarily a suburban county. Tom Moreland Interchange
Tom Moreland Interchange, colloquially known as ''Spaghetti Junction'', is the interchange of Interstate 85 (I-85) and I-285, along with several access roads, in northern DeKalb County, Georgia, northeast of Atlanta and just to the south of Norcross in Gwinnett County. It is named for Tom Moreland, a former commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) from 1975 to 1987. I-85 is a major traffic corridor from the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta in the Gwinnett County area into downtown Atlanta. I-285 is a beltway around Atlanta. In the northern I-285 corridor, in the area from I-85 counterclockwise to I-75, there has been a large amount of development of office space. Manuel's Tavern
Manuel's Tavern is a historic tavern in the Poncey–Highland district of Atlanta, Georgia. Established by Manuel Maloof in 1956, the location is notable as a meeting place for influential people in the Democratic Party. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. History Manuel's Tavern was established in 1956 by Manuel Maloof. The building itself is a commercial building from around 1922. To encourage discussions between patrons, Maloof banned live music and jukeboxes in the establishment. The bar is notable as a venue and meeting place for members of the Democratic Party. In 1970, Jimmy Carter announced his gubernatorial campaign in the bar. In 2015, President Barack Obama visited the bar during a visit to Atlanta, playing a game of darts at the location. The Shakespeare Tavern is an Elizabethan playhouse located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Starting productions at Manuel's Tavern in Atlanta in 1984, the Tavern moved to 499 Peachtree Street in 1990. Paul James Hemphill (February 18, 1936 – July 11, 2009) was an American journalist and author who wrote extensively about often-overlooked topics in the Southern United States such as country music, Evangelicalism, football, stock car racing and the blue collar people he met on his journeys around the South. Early life and education Hemphill was born in 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama, where his father was a truck driver. He grew up Birmingham's Woodlawn neighborhood and attended Woodlawn High School there. He briefly played for the Class D minor league baseball Graceville Oilers of the Alabama–Florida League but was cut from the team at the start of spring training. Hemphill then played semi-pro baseball before switching to focus on college and writing.
