Manuel Franco (jockey)
Manuel "Manny" Franco (born December 19, 1994) is a Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican professional jockey, best known for winning the 2020 Belmont Stakes riding Tiz the Law. Listed at and , Franco has been riding professionally since 2013. Franco won his first graded stakes in 2015 aboard Coffee Clique in the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap and won his first Grade 1 win on Oct 16, 2016 aboard Joking. He won his second Grade 1 a week later. On October 29, 2023, he earned career wins number 1,999 and 2,000 in the first two races at "Belmont at the Big A" at Aqueduct. A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase (horse racing), steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100–120 lb. (45–55 kg), and physically fit. They are typically self-employed, and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer, whose colors they wear while competing in a race. They also receive a percentage of the horse's winnings. The Gander Stakes is an ungraded stakes race for New York bred Thoroughbred race horses, three-years-old and older, run at Belmont Park or at Aqueduct Racetrack. The Gander serves as a prep for the Evan Shipman Handicap running at Belmont Park which is restricted to New York breeds. The Correction Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. A non-graded stakes race for fillies and mares age four and older, it is raced on dirt over a distance of six furlongs. It currently offers a purse of $100,000. Inaugurated in 1940 at Jamaica Race Course, following that track's closure the race was moved in 1960 to its current location at Aqueduct Racetrack. The Cicada Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. Inaugurated in 1993, the Cicada Stakes was run at a distance of seven furlongs until 2006 when it was modified to six furlongs. It is a black type stakes race with a purse of $100,000 and has been a prep race to the Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, including the Kentucky Oaks, the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and Mother Goose Stakes. The race is named for the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame filly, Cicada. Owned by the renowned Meadow Stable of Christopher Chenery, she was voted champion two-year-old filly in 1961, champion three-year-old filly in 1962, and champion handicap filly or mare in 1963. The With Anticipation Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-olds over a distance of miles on the turf track scheduled annually in end of August or early September at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. History The race is named in honor of George W. Strawbridge Jr.'s outstanding turf runner, With Anticipation who won the Grade I Sword Dancer Stakes twice at Saratoga. The East View Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. It is restricted to fillies bred in the State of New York. Run in December, the race is contested on dirt over a distance of miles. The race was inaugurated in 1910 at the Empire City Race Track in Yonkers, New York as a contest for horses of either sex. Due to a New York State ban on parimutuel betting there was no race run in 1911, 1912, or 1913. It was not run in 1915 and in 1953 the event was suspended indefinitely. It was revived in 1978 with its current entry restrictions. The Excelsior Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the first week of April at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. A Listed event for three-year-olds and up, it is contested over a distance of one-and-one-eighth miles 9 furlong. "Excelsior" is Latin for "Upward, ever upward", and is the motto of the state of New York. In 1928, when Hall of Famer Grey Lag was ten years old, he came in third.
