Manuel Azadigian
Manuel Azadigian (October 15, 1901 – September 17, 1924) was an Armenian-American painter. Early life Manuel Azadigian was born in Malatya in the Ottoman Empire into a moderately influential family of the village on his mother's side. Manuel demonstrated a talent for drawing from his earliest years. By the time of his birth, many of his relatives had already begun immigrating to the United States for a better life and to escape persecution they faced as Armenians. His father, George Azadigian, moved to America in 1908 to prepare the way for his wife and two children, who joined him there in June 1912. The Azadigian family settled in Philadelphia, where his maternal relatives had settled in North Philadelphia, and entered the local public school. He studied there for three years before having to leave school in 1915 at age 13 to help his impoverished family. Society Of Independent Artists
Society of Independent Artists was an association of American artists founded in 1916 and based in New York. Background Based on the French Société des Artistes Indépendants, the goal of the society was to hold annual exhibitions by avant-garde artists. Exhibitions were to be open to anyone who wanted to display their work, and shows were without juries or prizes. In order to enter, one had to pay a six-dollar membership and entry fee. Founders of the Society were Walter Arensberg, John Covert, Marcel Duchamp, Katherine Sophie Dreier, William J. Glackens, Albert Gleizes, John Marin, Walter Pach, Man Ray, Mary Rogers (artist), John Sloan and Joseph Stella. The "First Annual Exhibition" of the society at the Grand Central Palace, New York, April 10-May 6, 1917, included more than 2,000 art works, which the catalog indicates were hung in alphabetical order by the artist's last name. Lawnview Memorial Park
Lawnview Memorial Park, also referred to as Lawnview Cemetery, is a cemetery located at 500 Huntingdon Pike in Rockledge, Pennsylvania. It is in size and is managed by the Odd Fellows Cemetery Company of Philadelphia. It contains the reburial of tens of thousands of bodies from Monument Cemetery and the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Philadelphia after they were closed in the 1950s. History In 1904, the cemetery was established in Rockledge, Pennsylvania. In 1914, a stone chapel was built to provide non-denominational services for funerals. In 1956, Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia was closed and the property sold to Temple University and the Philadelphia Board of Education. The University contacted 748 families about the cemetery closure. Approximately 28,000 bodies were reinterred to Lawnview Memorial Park with only 300 grave markers included in the move for families members that were located. Odd Fellows Cemetery (Philadelphia)
Odd Fellows Cemetery was a 32 acre cemetery located North and South of Diamond Street and between 22nd and 25th Street in the North Philadelphia West neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1849 by the Odd Fellows fraternal organization for the burial of their members. The eighty-one foot high, brown stone, Egyptian Revival architecture, Egyptian Revival gatehouse was designed by architects Stephen Decatur Button and Joseph C. Hoxie. The Odd Fellows Cemetery was located a short distance from Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Old Glenwood Cemetery and adjoined the smaller Order of United American Mechanics, United American Mechanics' Cemetery. The cemetery was a part of the United States National Cemetery System during the American Civil War with a leased lot within the cemetery for 277 soldiers that died in nearby hospitals.
