Mantua Bog State Nature Preserve
The Mantua Bog State Nature Preserve (or Mantua Swamp) is a protected wetland in Mantua Township, Portage County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976 and a state nature preserve in 1990. The national landmark designation encompasses which includes Marsh Wetlands State Nature Preserve, in addition to Mantua Bog State Nature Preserve. The nature preserve includes different types of wetlands including swamp forest, boreal bog, and cattail marshes. Mantua Township ( ) is one of the eighteen civil township, townships of Portage County, Ohio, Portage County, Ohio, United States. The United States Census, 2020, 2020 census found 4,576 people in the township. Name and history Mantua Township was named in commemoration of Mantua, Italy, which in 1796 was besieged by Napoleon, during the Napoleonic Wars. It is the only Mantua Township statewide. Government The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. Mantua, Ohio
Mantua ( ) is a village in northern Portage County, Ohio, United States, along the Cuyahoga River. The population was 1,001 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area. It was formed from portions of Mantua Township in the Connecticut Western Reserve. History The first settlers came to Mantua Township in 1798. The area that eventually became the village of Mantua was owned by the Tappan family of Tappanville, later Ravenna, Ohio. After they made the Grand Tour of Europe in 1842, they renamed their northern county properties to Mantua, and simultaneously renamed Tappanville to Ravenna, after the two towns in Italy. The town was laid out in the 1840s as Mantua Station, a stop on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad. It was incorporated as Mantua in 1898.
