Mansfield Roller Mill
The Mansfield Roller Mill or Mansfield Mill is a (gristmill) that was built in Mansfield, Indiana, United States by Jacob Rohm in 1875. This building replaced an older mill that dates back to 1821 built by James Kelsey and Francis Dickson; The mill is a state historic site owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks. It is operated by the Raccoon Lake Interpretive Services from nearby Raccoon State Recreation Area. Much of the original water powered equipment still operates. History Original Mill In 1821 James Kelsey and Francis Dickson partnered up to build a small mill along the banks of the Big Raccoon Creek. The spot they chose was ideal as it stood on firm sandstone bedrock near a sandstone ford in the creek. Plenty of virgin timber in the uncut wilderness provided materials for the original 30 X 20 log structure. Mansfield (also called Mansfield Village, Dicksons Mills, Dixons Mills, Dublin or New Dublin) is an unincorporated community in Jackson Township, Parke County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History The village was originally named New Dublin by James Kelsey in 1820. Within a couple of years, it was called Dickson's Mills, and then Strain's Mills, before it became known as Mansfield in the 1830s. The village prospered when a roller mill was built by James Kelsey and Francis Dickson in 1820. As the milling industry expanded, the village grew to a thriving town of more than 300. A sash mill and carding mill were added, and the little town gained a general store, blacksmith, cooperage and wagon maker, and a church and school were organized. Mansfield Covered Bridge
The Mansfield Covered Bridge is a Double Burr Arch double span truss bridge located on Mansfield Road (historic) and Big Raccoon Creek in Mansfield southeast of Rockville in Parke County, Indiana. Built by Joseph J. Daniels in 1867 at a cost of $12,200. At it is the second longest covered bridge left in Parke County. Parke County Covered Bridge Festival
The Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is a fall festival which takes place in nine communities in Parke County, Indiana, United States. It celebrates the county's 31 covered bridges, and is attended by more than 2 million people each year. It begins on the second Friday in October and lasts 10 days. Attractions include Fox's Overlook, Boardwalk and Parke Place, waterfall, historic mill, and the beautiful covered bridge. The festival began in 1957, when a group of local women decided to hold a three-day festival to accommodate the many interested tourists looking for information about the bridges. Now the festival is thriving and puts Mansfield on the map 10 days of the year. The first festival was rather small and occurred only in Rockville. 2020 saw no festival. Pleasant Valley Cemetery
Pleasant Valley Cemetery and Pleasant Valley Methodist Church were formed in 1805 and are located in Parke County, Indiana. History The house was located in Raccoon Township, Parke County, Indiana. The first pastor of the church was William Taylor. Some of the first historical members were James Strange, brother of John Strange, the noted pioneer Methodist Circuit Rider; Bliss Kalley, a native of Massachusetts; Tobias Miller; Jacob Overpeck, a native of Virginia; and Daniel Kalley. The families of these pioneers constituted a large part of the membership in the second generation. The member-ship increased to more than one hundred, and a new frame house was built about 1855. During the American Civil War, the house deteriorated, and services were stopped. In 1885 a new house was built, and services started again. The covered bridges of Parke County are well-known tourist attractions in Parke County, Indiana, Parke County, Indiana, United States, which touts itself as the "Covered Bridge Capital of the World". The county claims to have more covered bridges than any other county in the United States.
