Mansfield Railway
The Mansfield Railway was an eleven-mile railway line in Nottinghamshire, England. It was built to serve collieries opening in the coalfield around Mansfield, and ran between junctions at Clipstone and Kirkby-in-Ashfield on the Great Central Railway. It opened in 1916 and was worked by the GCR. Passenger stations were opened on the line, although, at the date of opening, road bus competition was already dominant. The passenger service was withdrawn in 1956 and the line closed in stages as collieries ceased work, completely ending operation in 2003. Prior railways Railways had existed in the immediate area of Mansfield for many years. The first proper railway had been the Mansfield and Pinxton Railway of 1819, built for the purpose of conveying coal from Pinxton Basin on the Cromford Canal. Immingham
Immingham is a town, civil parish and ward in the North East Lincolnshire unitary authority of England. It is situated on the south-west bank of the Humber Estuary, and is north-west from Grimsby. Ian Allan, OBE (29 June 1922 – 28 June 2015) was a publisher who specialised in transport titles through his company Ian Allan Publishing. Early life Allan was born at Christ's Hospital independent school, Horsham, Sussex, where his father, G.A.T. Allan, was clerk to the school. He was educated at St Paul's School, London. At the age of 15, he had a leg amputated following an accident during Officers' Training Corps exercises. His hopes of joining the Southern Railway as a cadet were dashed as result of his failure to pass the school certificate examination. He was nevertheless offered a position in the Southern Railway's Public Relations Office at by Sir John Elliot. It has been published since 1962. The magazine was originally based in Shepperton, Middlesex. Bilsthorpe Colliery
Bilsthorpe Colliery was a colliery in north Nottinghamshire. From when work started in 1925 to the pits closure in 1997, 77 people died at the pit. History The pit began in July 1925 with two shafts. The mine was completed in 1928. On 1 March 1927, fourteen miners were killed. On 26 July 1934, nine miners were killed. 1993 disaster On 18 August 1993, a roof collapsed killing 26-year old Bill McCulloch (from Rainworth), 50-year-old Peter Alcock and an under-manager, 31-year-old David Shelton (from Blyth). A team from the Mansfield-based Mines Rescue Service searched for survivors. A 1994 report was produced by the HM Inspectorate of Mines. The disaster was caused by unsafe roof bolting.
