Manpo Station
Manp'o Ch'ŏngnyŏn station is a railway station in Manp'o municipal city, Chagang Province, North Korea, on the Manp'o Line of the Korean State Railway; it is also the starting point of the Pukbunaeryuk Line to Hyesan and of the Unha Line to Unha.Kokubu, Hayato, 将軍様の鉄道 (Shōgun-sama no Tetsudō), History The station, originally called Manp'o station, was opened on 1 February 1939 by the Chosen Government Railway, along with the rest of the final section of the Manp'o Line from Kanggye to Manp'o. With the opening of the Ji'an Yalu River Border Railway Bridge later in 1939 a connection was made with the South Manchuria Railway, and in October 1939 a P'yŏngyang-Jilin passenger train was put into service. Manpo
Manpo () is a city of northwestern Chagang Province, North Korea. As of 2008, it had an estimated population of 116,760. It looks across the border to the city of Ji'an, Jilin province, China. History Manp'o was incorporated as a city in October 1967. Earlier, in October 1949, it had been combined into a single county consisting Manpo-myon, Kosan-myon, Oegwi-myon, Iso-myon and Sijung-myon, which were split from Kanggye-gun. Manpo had first been mentioned in 1424, in the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, fortresses and camps were built in this area, for which the city is now named after. South Manchuria Railway
The South Manchuria Railway (; ), officially , Mantetsu () or Mantie () for short, was a large of the Empire of Japan whose primary function was the operation of railways on the Dalian– Fengtian (Mukden)–Changchun (called Xinjing from 1931 to 1945) corridor in northeastern China, as well as on several branch lines. In 1905, after Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, this area was taken over by Japan as the South Manchuria Railway Zone. Mantetsu was established in 1906 to operate the railways taken over from the Russians. Subsequently, Mantetsu expanded by building new lines for itself and for Chinese-owned undertakings, and after the establishment of the puppet state of Manchukuo in 1932, it was also entrusted with the management of the Manchukuo National Railway. Ji'an Yalu River Border Railway Bridge
The Ji'an Yalu River Border Railway Bridge () is a single-track railway bridge that spans the Yalu River and connects the outskirts of the Chinese town of Ji'an, Jilin, Ji'an in Jilin, Jilin Province with the North Korean town of Manpo, Manp'o in Chagang, Chagang Province. The bridge is 589.23 meters long and its height is 16 meters. It was constructed between 1937 and July 31, 1939 by Empire of Japan, Imperial Japan which during this time controlled both Korea and northeast China (through the puppet state of Manchukuo). A fortification near the Chinese end of the bridge dates from the same period. A square arch was added to the Chinese end of the bridge in 2004. The bridge was used for shipping troops from China into Korea during the Korean War and was targeted by US aerial bombing; however, it was not destroyed. Chagang Province
Chagang Province (; ) is a province of North Korea; it is bordered by China's Jilin and Liaoning provinces to the north, Ryanggang and South Hamgyong to the east, South Pyongan to the south, and North Pyongan to the west. Chagang was formed in 1949, after being demarcated from North Pyongan. The provincial capital is Kanggye. Before 2019, Chagang was the only province of North Korea completely inaccessible to tourists, possibly due to weapons factories and nuclear weapon facilities located there. In 2019 the city of Manpo became accessible to tourists.
