''Manniella'' is a genus of orchids (family Orchidaceae) belonging to the subfamily Orchidoideae. It consists of two species: the type species '' Manniella gustavi'' Rchb.f. and '' Manniella cypripedioides'', Salazar & al., both from West Africa West Africa, also known as Western Africa, is the westernmost region of Africa. Rudolf Schlechter
Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter (16 October 1872 – 16 November 1925) was a German taxonomist, botanist, and author of several works on orchids. He went on botanical expeditions in Africa, Indonesia, New Guinea, South and Central America and Australia. His vast herbarium was destroyed during the bombing of Berlin in 1945. Early life Rudolf Schlechter was born on 16 October 1872 in Berlin, the third of six children; his father Hugo Schlechter was a lithographer. After finishing school at the Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium he started a horticulture education at a gardening market. He later worked at the University of Berlin garden. There he worked as an assistant till the autumn of 1891. His brother was Max Schlechter (1874–1960), was a German trader and collector of natural history specimens. Orchidoideae
The Orchidoideae, or the orchidoid orchids, are a subfamily of the orchid family (Orchidaceae) that contains around 3630 species. Species typically have a single (monandrous), fertile anther which is erect and basitonic. Description The subfamily Orchidoideae and the previously recognized subfamily Spiranthoideae are considered the closest allies in the natural group of the monandrous orchids because of several generally shared characters: * a shared terrestrial plant, terrestrial habit * sectile (capable of being severed) or granular pollinium, pollinia * erect anthers. Gustav Mann
Gustav Mann (1836–1916) was a German botanist who led expeditions in West Africa and was also a gardener at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Born in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1836, he was chosen by William Jackson Hooker, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to take part in William Balfour Baikie's expedition to West Africa. While there, he sent numerous specimens back to Kew. He married Mary Anne Stovell in 1863.
