Manke Nelis
Manke Nelis (born Cornelis Pieters; 1919-1993) was a Dutch singer in the levenslied genre. Career Manke Nelis was born in Groenlo on 16 December 1919 and began his musical career as a bass player, often accompanying his brother-in-law, accordionist Johnny Meijer. In the 1950s he performed under the stage name Carlo Pietro and started singing the Amsterdam ''levenslied''. A motorcycle accident in France and a subsequent medical error cost him a leg; he reportedly spent the more than 100,000 guilders he received as compensation within a year. His biggest hit was "Kleine Jodeljongen" in 1987. In 1987 he narrowly survived a bus crash on an American tour with Dutch artists, near San Diego. He died of cancer 8 October 1993, at age 73. Tante Leen ( English: Auntie Leen, January 28, 1912 — August 5, 1992), real name Helena Kok-Polder, later Helena Jansen-Polder, was a Dutch folk singer from Amsterdam, Netherlands. Together with her friend and colleague Johnny Jordaan, the two together hold the title of "de Beste Stem van de Jordaan" (English: ''The best voice of the Jordaan''). Career Born 28 January 1912 in Amsterdam, Tante Leen didn't perform live until she was 43-years of age. Before that point she earned a living at cleaning and shrimp peeling. Regular custodians of the café in which she worked signed her up for a talent search one day which was being initiated by record label Bovema in order to find the best voice of the Jordaan. Levenslied
Levenslied ( Dutch, literally "life song" or "song about life") is a sentimental Dutch-language subgenre of popular music. ''Levenslied'' lyrics can be sweet or bitter, light and sentimental, but also reflective and dark, about subjects such as love, misery and far-away, sunny, exotic holiday places. The darker, more sentimental songs are also known as "smartlap" ("sorrow bandage", or tearjerker). The levenslied is related to the ''chanson'' though for a lower-class audience, like the schlager. A typical levenslied has catchy, simple rhythms and melodies and is built up in couplets and refrains. Traditional musical instruments in levenslied music are the accordion and the barrel organ. Modern levenslied artists also use synthesizers and guitars. The songs are usually in Dutch but also English or Italian. Johnny Jordaan
Johnny Jordaan was the pseudonym for Johannes Hendricus van Musscher (7 February 1924 – 8 January 1989), a Dutch singer of popular music, in particular the genre known as '' levenslied'', a Dutch variety of the French ''chanson''. He was well known for his songs about the city of Amsterdam, especially the Jordaan district (the genre dedicated to the neighborhood is known as the '' Jordaanlied''), which he sang in a typical "hiccuping Mokum vibrato", "Mokum" being the Hebrew-derived nickname for the Amsterdam inner city area. In the 1950s, Johnny Jordaan rose almost instantly to the level of national celebrity and became the "uncrowned king of the ''Jordaanlied''", and his hit song " Geef mij maar Amsterdam" is one of the songs Amsterdammers identify with most. Elandsgracht
The Elandsgracht is a street and former canal in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It runs between the Prinsengracht and the Singelgracht in the Jordaan neighborhood of the Amsterdam-Centrum district. Bridge 169 over the Singelgracht and Bridge 107 over the Lijnbaansgracht connect the Elandsgracht in the direction of the Kinkerstraat. The Elandsgracht is in the west of the Grachtengordel (canal belt). The Elandsstraat runs parallel to the Elandsgracht. There are houses, shops, cafés and restaurants on the former canal, with parking spaces in the middle.
