Manis was a trained orangutan that played Clyde as Clint Eastwood's sidekick in the 1978 box office hit ''Every Which Way But Loose''. Its 1980 sequel, ''Any Which Way You Can'' (1980), did not feature Manis, as the "child actor" had grown too much between productions. In the sequel, two orangutans, C.J. and Buddha, shared the role. In a documentary produced by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), it was alleged that Manis was beaten on the set by his trainer to keep him docile. The trainer would spray mace in his face and then beat him with an iron pipe wrapped in newspaper. Giant asian pangolin (''Manis palaeojavanica'' ancient Javan pangolin", is an extinct species of pangolin (from genus ''Manis'') that was native to Asia. In 1926, E. Dubois described the bones of ''M. palaeojavanica'' discovered in Java. Later, Lord Medway excavated another set of bones at the Niah Caves in Malaysia. In 1960, D. A. Hoojier identified these bones as that of an extinct species. Using carbon dating, the Niah Caves bones were determined to be 42,000–47,000 years old. ''M. palaeojavanica'' is one of the only known fossils to be found nearly complete of the pangolin species, due to their armour-like scales that protected their bodies when they were alive. The ghost catshark (''Apristurus manis'') is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae found on the continental slopes in the northwest Atlantic off Massachusetts, the northeast Atlantic from the Porcupine Bank west of Ireland and the southern Atlantic off Cape Town, at depths between . Description The ghost catshark can grow up to in length and reaches maturity at a length of for females. Distribution The ghost catshark is a demersal (bottom-loving) species living just above the seabed in deep water in the Atlantic Ocean between 40° and 60° North. It is present on the continental slopes off Massachusetts in the United States and on the Porcupine Bank west of Ireland. A reported sighting of the deep-water catshark (''Apristurus profundorum'') off Mauritania may have in fact been this species. ''Averrhoa carambola'' is a species of tree in the family Oxalidaceae native to tropical Southeast Asia; it has a number of common names, including carambola, star fruit and five-corner. It is a small tree or shrub that grows tall, with rose to red-purple flowers. The flowers are small and bell-shaped, with five petals that have whitish edges. The flowers are often produced year round under tropical conditions. The tree is cultivated in tropical and semitropical regions for its edible fruits. Mannes School of Music is a music conservatory in The New School, a private research university in New York City. In the fall of 2015, Mannes moved from its previous location on Manhattan's Upper West Side to join the rest of the New School campus in Arnhold Hall at 55 W. 13th Street. History Originally called The David Mannes Music School, it was founded in 1916 by David Mannes, concertmaster of the New York Symphony Orchestra, and his wife Clara Damrosch, sister of Walter Damrosch, then conductor of that orchestra, and Frank Damrosch.
