Mania (novel)
''Mania'' is a satirical dystopian novel by Lionel Shriver, published in 2024 by HarperCollins. The story imagines a social campaign seeking to eliminate the prejudice against low intelligence. It follows the lives of the main character and her best friend as they take opposing views on the issues surrounding the disruptive movement—which allows the author to depict different viewpoints across the political spectrum. Plot Pearson Converse is brought up in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses—a church with strict codes of behavior. As a child in 1970s Pennsylvania, she rebels against the church's dogma and her family, and ultimately leaves them as a teenager to live with the Ruth family. The Ruths give her a new view into a life of open thought and academia, and the family's daughter Emory becomes her best friend. Dystopian Novel
Utopian and dystopian fiction are subgenres of speculative fiction that explore extreme forms of social and political structures. Utopian fiction portrays a setting that agrees with the author's ethos, having various attributes of another reality intended to appeal to readers. Dystopian fiction offers the opposite: the portrayal of a setting that completely disagrees with the author's ethos. Some novels combine both genres, often as a metaphor for the different directions humanity can take depending on its choices, ending up with one of two possible futures. Both utopias and dystopias are commonly found in science fiction and other types of speculative fiction.
