The Manhattan Fencing Center in Manhattan, New York City, was founded in 2007 by Olympic coach Yury Gelman. Yury Gelman
Yury Gelman (born October 13, 1955) is a Ukrainian-born American fencing coach. He is seven-time Olympic Games, Olympic fencing coach for the United States, who has coached Team USA in the 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, 2016 Rio, 2020 Tokyo, and 2024 Paris Olympics, and US National Men's Sabre (fencing), Saber Coach. Through July 2024, he had coached 19 fencers who became Olympians, six of whom won Olympic medals. Gelman also served as coach of the Ukrainian Fencing Team from 1987 to 1991. He has also served as Head Fencing Coach for St. John's University (New York City), St. John's University for three decades, during which time he has coached 26 NCAA individual champions, and 140 All-Americans. Fencing Practice And Techniques
Fencing practice and techniques of modern competitive fencing are governed by the International Fencing Federation (FIE), though they developed from conventions developed in 18th- and 19th-century Europe to govern fencing as a martial art and a gentlemanly pursuit. The modern weapons for sport fencing are the foil, épée, and sabre. Playing area A fencing bout takes place on a strip, or '' piste'', which, according to the current FIE regulations, should be between wide and long. Dagmara "Daga" Wozniak (; born July 1, 1988) is an American saber fencer. Wozniak was named to the U.S. Olympic team at the 2008 Summer Olympics in women's saber competition as a substitute, and as a competitor at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. As of the summer of 2016, she was ranked as one of the top 10 saber fencers in the world. Early life and education Her parents are Gregory and Irena Wozniak and she has an older sister, Zuzanna. She was born in Wrocław, Poland. When Wozniak was one year old, she immigrated to the United States with her parents. The family settled in Avenel, New Jersey, Wozniak's hometown.
