Manex Goihenetxe
Manex Goihenetxe Etxamendi or Manex Goienetxe (22 September 1942 in Ezterenzubi, Lower Navarre – 2 March 2004 in Biscau mountain, Bearn) was a Basque historian and cultural activist. Biography Born to a farmer family, he went to Great Britain to study. After completing French High School in Roazhon in 1963, he was ordained friar in the congregation of Ploermael in 1967. In 1969, he graduated in history at Toulouse, and started working as a teacher. Goihenetxe also got the teacher certification (DEA) at Pau in 1981. He earned his PhD in 1984. As a teacher, he got job positions in Oloron, Lourdes, Donibane Lohizune and Kastellin (Brittany). He was the writer of the association "Ikas" from 1972 to 1983. He assumed the chief managerial position of the UEU from 1977 to 1979. On 27 July 1975, he was named associate member by Euskaltzaindia and made partner of Eusko Ikaskuntza. The Basque Government ( eu, Eusko Jaurlaritza, es, Gobierno Vasco) is the governing body of the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. The head of the Basque government is known as the ''Lehendakari''. The Lehendakari is appointed by the Basque Parliament every four years, after a regional election. Its headquarters are located in the Lakua district of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Álava. The first Basque Government was created after the approval of the first Basque Statute of Autonomy on 1 October 1936, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. ''Berria'' ( Basque: ''News'') is the only daily newspaper published wholly in the Basque language and which can be read in the entirety of the Basque country. It was created after the closure of the previous Basque language newspaper, Egunkaria, by the Spanish government, after being accused of having ties with ETA. The newspaper shutdown was regarded by many as an attack on freedom of speech and the Basque language. After 7 years, in April 2010, the editorial team were found not guilty and acquitted. Labourd ( eu, Lapurdi; la, Lapurdum; Gascon: ''Labord'') is a former French province and part of the present-day Pyrénées Atlantiques ''département''.
