Mandurama
Mandurama is a village in the Blayney Shire, New South Wales, Australia. At the , Mandurama and the surrounding area had a population of 355 people. Geography Mandurama is situated west of Sydney, southwest of Bathurst, and northeast of Cowra on the Mid-Western Highway. History The site of the village and surrounding areas was home to the Wiradjuri people prior to settlement, and the name "Mandurama" is derived from their word for 'water holes'. A prominent pastoralist, Thomas Icely, came to the colony in 1820 as a trader. In 1823 he received a land grant of 800 hectares (2000 acres) at Saltram, in the Bathurst area. By 1831 Icely owned Coombing Park, and went on building up his acreage by purchase and further grant. By 1836 there were thirty convicts assigned to Icely's property and in September 1836 he asked the authorities for three more. Mandurama Collection
The Mandurama Collection contains 3,444 photographs taken by Estonian-born photographer Evan Lumme, who lived from 1865 to 1935. Lumme arrived in Australia in 1881 and set up business in Ashfield, New South Wales, as a photographer. In 1900, he moved to Orange and spent the rest of his life in that area. The photographs were taken in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, most being of the residents and village of Mandurama as well as Lyndhurst and Carcoar but there are images from as far west as Boorowa and many from unknown areas. In addition, the images include the residents and areas of Cowra, Boorowa, Burnt Yards, Garland, Gallymont, Neville, Shaw, Blayney and Orange. The photographs are considered an invaluable resource for seeing Australia as it was in the Victorian and the post-Federation eras. Few collections of this size survive to this day. Cliefden, Mandurama
Cliefden is a heritage-listed homestead at 1521 Belubula Way, Mandurama, Blayney Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is one of a group of historic sites labelled the Ben Hall Sites for their association with bushranger Ben Hall, along with Ben Hall's Death Site, the Bushranger Hotel, Escort Rock, the Grave of Ben Hall and Wandi. It was built from 1842. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 8 October 2010. The Cliefden Caves ia heritage-listed geoheritage site in Mandurama, Cowra Shire, New South Wales, Australia. The caves comprises Ordovician fossil localities, limestone caves, a spring and tufa dams, and a site where limestone was first discovered in inland Australia. Thomas Icely
Thomas Icely (3 November 179713 February 1874) was an early colonial New South Wales landholder and stockbreeder. As a nominee Legislative Councillor from 1843, to 1853, and from 1855, until the establishment of responsible government in 1856, he was a consistent supporter of the Governor. He served a second term as a life appointee to the Legislative Council from 1864. Icely was the beneficiary of large land grants to which he added purchased land holdings, his main holding from 1831 was Coombing Park. To support this holding, the village of Mandurama was established in 1876. Thomas Icely was a benefactor of the Anglican Church in Carcoar where he funded the building of St Paul’s church in Belubula St. Designed by Edmund Blacket, a small gothic revival structure and build of brick and sandstone with a slate roof between 1845-48 making it the second oldest church west of the Blue Mountains. Coombing Park
Coombing Park is a farming property situated in western New South Wales just off the Mid-Western Highway about 5 km west of Carcoar, 260 km west of Sydney and 54 km south-west of Bathurst. The property is of considerable note because of its relationship with convicts, bushrangers and the Cobb & Co coaching company. The property was offered as an estate to its owner Thomas Icely by the early New South Wales Government in 1826. It was one of the first estates created on the western side of the Blue Mountains that border the area of Sydney. The Wiradjuri people (; ) are a group of Aboriginal Australian people from central New South Wales, united by common descent through kinship and shared traditions. They survived as skilled hunter-fisher-gatherers, in family groups or clans, and many still use knowledge of hunting and gathering techniques as part of their customary life. In the 21st century, major Wiradjuri groups live in Condobolin, Peak Hill, Narrandera and Griffith.
