Jack Kirkland
Jack Kirkland (July 25, 1902 – February 22, 1969) was an American playwright, producer, director and screenwriter. Kirkland's greatest success was the play ''Tobacco Road'', adapted from the Erskine Caldwell novel. His other plays included '' Frankie and Johnny'', ''Tortilla Flat'', ''Suds in your Eye'', ''Mr. Adam'', ''Man with the Golden Arm'', and '' Mandingo''. Kirkland collaborated with Melville Baker on several screen projects including '' Zoo in Budapest'' (1933) starring Loretta Young and Gene Raymond, '' Now and Forever'' (1934) starring Gary Cooper, Carole Lombard and Shirley Temple, and '' The Gilded Lily'' (1935) starring Claudette Colbert, Fred MacMurray and Ray Milland. Georgia Burke
Georgia Burke (February 27, 1878 — November 28, 1985) was an American actress who had performed on television, radio, and Broadway theatre between the 1930s and the 1960s. In 1934 Burke made her debut in Broadway in ''They Shall Not Die'', and in 1944 she won a Donaldson Award as the third choice for Best Supporting Actress in Edward Chodorov's play, ''Decision''. Burke had performed in the 1952 U.S. State Department-sponsored international production of ''Porgy and Bess'' and had taken a role as a nurse in the radio program '' When a Girl Marries'', which had been broadcast for 18 years. She had also performed in the 1944 Broadway production of '' Anna Lucasta'' and its second film counterpart in 1958. Burke has been credited as one of the early appearances of the "stereotyped humorous black maid" in entertainment since her appearance in the radio soap opera ''Betty and Bob''. ''Mandingo'' is a 1975 American historical melodrama film that focuses on the Atlantic slave trade in the Antebellum South. The film's title refers to the mandinka people, who are referred to as "Mandingos", and described as being good slaves for fighting matches. Produced by Dino De Laurentiis for Paramount Pictures, the film was directed by Richard Fleischer. The screenplay, by Norman Wexler, was adapted from the 1957 novel '' Mandingo'' by Kyle Onstott, and the 1961 play '' Mandingo'' by Jack Kirkland (which is derived from the novel). Rockne Tarkington
William Rockne Tarkington, Jr. (May 14, 1932 – April 5, 2015) was an American stage, film and television actor. Career Born in Junction City, Kansas, Tarkington began his career as a stage actor, and made the transition to television with guest appearances in episodes of ''The Alfred Hitchcock Hour'', ''Kraft Suspense Theatre'', ''The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'', ''Ben Casey'', ''Mission: Impossible (1966 TV series), Mission: Impossible'', ''Bewitched'', and many others. Antebellum Era
In the history of the Southern United States, the Antebellum Period (from la, ante bellum, lit= before the war) spanned the end of the War of 1812 to the start of the American Civil War in 1861. The Antebellum South was characterized by the use of slavery and the culture it fostered. As the era proceeded, Southern intellectuals and leaders gradually shifted from portraying slavery as an embarrassing and temporary system, to a full-on defense of slavery as a positive good, and harshly criticized the budding abolitionist movement. The economy was largely plantation based, and dependent on exports. Society was stratified, inegalitarian, and perceived by immigrants as lacking in opportunities. Consequently the manufacturing base lagged behind the non-slave states. Wealth inequality grew as the larger landholders took the greater share of the profits generated by slaves, which also helped to entrench their power as a political class.
