Manchester Basketball are an English professional basketball team based in the city of Manchester, that compete in Super League Basketball. Background Following the removal of the professional league licence of the British Basketball League, a new top-flight basketball competition, Super League Basketball, was announced. The Manchester franchise in the previous competition, the Manchester Giants, were owned by the league due to a previous period of administration in 2023, and as such the club's brand and intellectual rights were held in the now-defunct company. A Manchester franchise for the new competition was acquired by Sherwood Family Investment Office, led by Ned Sherwood, with the franchise to be led by Ben Pierson. The team's name and brand were announced in September 2024. Super League Basketball (SLB) is a men's professional basketball sports league, league. Established in 2024, the competition replaces the former British Basketball League (BBL) as the top-level men's basketball competition in Great Britain. National Basketball Performance Centre
The National Basketball Performance Centre (NBPC) is a 2,000 capacity, three-court basketball arena located in Manchester, England. Background Construction on the £11m Belle Vue Sports Village, including the 2,000 seat FIBA-standard arena, began in early 2015. The arena was funded by Manchester City Council, Basketball England and Sport England. Tenants In August 2016, it was announced that the Manchester Mystics were to relocate to the NPBC ahead of the 2016–17 Women's British Basketball League, WBBL season. Belle Vue, Manchester
Belle Vue is an area of Manchester, England, sited east of the city centre; it is bordered by the Hope Valley line to the east and the Glossop line to the west. The British Basketball League (BBL) was a men's professional basketball sports league, league in Great Britain. Since its establishment in 1987 the BBL represented the highest level of basketball competition within the United Kingdom. The Manchester Giants were a British professional basketball team based in Manchester, England. The franchise was established in 2011, and admitted to the top-tier British Basketball League in 2012. The team's formation was led by a consortium headed by Graham Herstell. Basketball has a very long history in England, being introduced there by YMCA almost immediately after it was invented (having been created by the Canadian Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Massachusetts). World Wars I and II further spurred its popularity. The three highest profile team sports in England are football, cricket and rugby. Basketball belongs to the next tier alongside ice hockey and netball; like these sports, it has a significant and dedicated following, a professional league, but attracts little coverage from the major British media outlets and suffers from lack of "crossover" appeal.
