Manal
Manal was an Argentine rock group formed in 1968. Together with Almendra and Los Gatos, they are considered founders of Argentine rock. The band members were Claudio Gabis on guitar, Javier Martínez on drums and vocals, and Alejandro Medina on bass and vocals. Martínez was the band's lead vocalist and leading songwriter. Trajectory 1968–1969: Formation The band grew out of the mythic ''"La Cueva"'' club. Martínez was a regular, and Gabis played guitar with several bands, including Miguel Abuelo's ''Los Abuelos''. Gabis was not keen on joining a band regularly as he was committed to college, but eventually was persuaded by Martínez, and Manal was born. The name "Manal" was based on the word ''mano'' ("hand"), which had acquired an additional meaning among young people in Buenos Aires, to refer to "things" or "the situation" (e.g. ''cómo viene la mano'', lit. Argentine Rock
Argentine rock (known locally as ''rock nacional'' , "national rock" in the sense of "local", "not international") is rock music composed or performed by Argentina, Argentine bands or artists mostly in Spanish. Argentine rock was the earliest incarnation of Spanish-language rock. It began by recycling hits of English-language rock & roll. A rising trend of composing new songs mostly in Spanish can be traced at least back to the late 1960s, when several garage groups and aspiring musicians began composing songs and lyrics that related to local social and musical topics. Since then, Argentine rock started and continued through uninterrupted evolution through the 1970s and into the 1980s. A distinguishing trait of Argentine rock is its insistence on Spanish language lyrics. Pappo
Norberto Aníbal Napolitano (10 March 1950 – 25 February 2005), popularly known as Pappo, was an Argentine rock musician, guitarist, singer and songwriter. One of the most influential figures in Argentine music, he was a forerunner of Argentine rock, heavy metal and blues. He is considered by various Argentine musicians, by the public and by the specialized press as the best guitarist in the history of Argentine rock, while B. B. King considered him one of the best guitarists of all time. He was a member of popular Argentine rock bands such as Los Abuelos de la Nada, Engranaje, Los Gatos and Billy Bond y La Pesada del Rock and Roll. He also founded the blues rock band Pappo's Blues; the hard rock band Aeroblus, in the 1970s; and the heavy metal band Riff in the 1980s. Vox Dei (band)
Vox Dei (Latin, 'Voice of God') is an Argentine rock band credited with recording the country's first concept album, ''La Biblia (album), La Biblia''. Their most prolific years were the 1970s, when they recorded ten albums. Vox Dei have had several line-up changes and a five-year hiatus. Their third and most commercially successful line-up featured Ricardo Soulé (guitar and vocals), Willy Quiroga (bass and vocals) and Rubén Basoalto (drums). This line-up was active from 1972 to 1974 (then in 1978 to the 1981 break-up), and was revived from 1986 to 1989, and again from 1996 to 1998. The band's line-up (which featured Willy Quiroga, and guitarist Carlos Gardellini from 1992) has been much more stable in recent years, although drummer Rubén Basoalto's death in 2010 (being succeeded by Simon Quiroga) left Willy Quiroga as the only original member still in the band. Javier Martínez (musician)
Los Beatniks were an early Argentine rock garage group. Active in the middle years of the 1960s, they went down in trivia history as recording the first original rock single in Argentina titled "Rebelde". Despite their short career, the band are considered one of the pioneers of Argentine rock. History The band featured three key figures of the early rock movement in Argentina: Moris and Pajarito Zaguri on guitars and voice, Javier Martínez on drums. They were also the most important band playing at the ''"La Cueva"'' club in Buenos Aires, one of the mythical gathering spots from which many of the first Argentine rock bands would emerge. Due to the limited commercial success of their first (and only) single, Los Beatniks separated in 1967. Jorge Álvarez (producer)
Jorge Álvarez (1932 – July 5, 2015) was an Argentine publisher and record producer, considered one of the most important promoters of Argentine culture in the 1960s and 1970s, first in the world of literature and later in the world of music. In 1963, he founded the publishing house Editorial Jorge Álvarez and later Ediciones de la Flor, from which he released the work of writers like Rodolfo Walsh, Ricardo Piglia, Manuel Puig, Joaquín Lavado, David Viñas, Marta Lynch, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson and Juan José Saer, as well as the ''Mafalda'' comic strip by cartoonist Quino. Between 1963 and 1968, he published around three hundred books that marked "a milestone in Argentine and Latin American literature." Los Gatos (band)
Los Gatos (Spanish for "the Cats") were an Argentine rock group of the late 1960s, founded in the wake of an earlier group, Los Gatos Salvajes, who shared two of the same members. They are considered part of the founding trinity of Spanish-language rock in Argentina, along with Almendra and Manal. The unexpected success of their 1967 debut single " La balsa" was the kickstarter of Argentine rock, and pioneered Spanish-language rock. They explored psychedelic rock and their later recordings with Pappo are an early example of progressive rock, before splitting in 1970. Los Gatos reunited for a tour in 2007. Los Shakers
Los Shakers were a popular rock band in the 1960s and was a part of the Uruguayan Invasion in Latin America. They were heavily influenced by the look and sound of The Beatles. In the late 1960s they would broaden and expand their musical direction before breaking up in 1969. History The band was formed in 1964 in Montevideo, Uruguay by brothers Hugo (lead guitar and keyboards) and Osvaldo Fattoruso (rhythm guitar), after watching the movie '' A Hard Day's Night'' starring The Beatles. They were modeled after The Beatles and even adopted similar haircuts and clothing. Almendra (band)
Almendra was one of the most important rock groups from Buenos Aires, Argentina in the late 1960s. Led by guitarist and lyricist Luis Alberto Spinetta, Almendra released between 1968 and 1971 a few singles and two albums – '' Almendra'' and ''Almendra II'' – that revolutionized the sound of Argentine rock for the remainder of the 20th century and almost single-handedly changed the way local rock music was perceived by critics and audiences. Widely compared to The Beatles by their local contemporaries, Almendra did not survive the 1960s and the making of a planned rock opera, though all individual members went on to form the backbone of Argentine rock in the 1970s. Miguel Abuelo
Miguel Angel Peralta, (March 21, 1946 – March 26, 1988) known by his artistic name Miguel Abuelo, was an Argentine rock musician and singer. Early days A native of Munro, in the Greater Buenos Aires industrial belt, Miguel Peralta was one of the young rockers that grew out of the ''Norte'' hotel, the ''Perla del Once'' café and the ''La Cueva'' night club in Buenos Aires in the late 1960s. Abuelo did not play in ''La Cueva'' but was friendly with many who did. At some point, he and fellow poetry buff Pipo Lernoud were approached by Ben Molar, a recording executive of ''Mandioca'' (the only label in Argentina dedicated to record Spanish language rock). On the spur of the moment, Peralta claimed that he had a band called ''Los Abuelos de la Nada'' (the Grandparents of Nothingness) which was ready to enter the studio. Cream (band)
Cream were a British rock supergroup formed in London in 1966. The group consisted of bassist Jack Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. Bruce was the primary songwriter and vocalist, although Clapton and Baker contributed to songs. Formed by members of previously successful bands, they are widely considered the first supergroup. Cream were highly regarded for the instrumental proficiency of each of their members.
