Mamdouh Saidam
Mamdouh Saidam (1940–1971) was a member of the Fatah who held several posts in the group and in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). He was one of the military commanders of the Fatah. Early life and education Saidam was born in a village, Aqir, near Ramla, in 1940. The family was forced to leave their home in 1948 when the Zionist forces invaded the village. They settled in Majdal for a while and then began to live in a refugee camp in Nuseirat near the Gaza Strip. After completing his education in Gaza and Egypt Saidam received a degree in geography from Alexandria University, Egypt, in 1963. Career and activities Following his graduation Saidam was employed as a teacher in Algeria. He joined the Fatah in 1965 becoming one of its second-wave members. Aqir
Aqir, also spelt Akir and Akkur, was a Palestinian Arab village in the Ramle Subdistrict, located 9 km southwest of Ramla and 1 km north of Wadi al-NasufiyyaKhalidi, 1990, p. 359 (today called Nahal Ekron). It was depopulated and demolished and replaced by Kiryat Ekron. History Until the early 20th century, Aqir was thought to lie at the site of the ancient Philistine city of Ekron, that has now been identified as Tel Mikne, 9 km to the south. The error seems rooted in antiquity; The Romans referred to the village as ''Accaron''. Archeological excavations indicate that a pottery workshop operated there during the Roman era, and a glass workshop was there during the Byzantine era. Yarmouk Camp
Yarmouk (, , ) is a district of the city of Damascus, populated by Palestinians. It is located from the center of Damascus and within municipal boundaries; this was not the case when it was established in 1957. It contains hospitals and schools. Yarmouk is an "unofficial" refugee camp (, ), as UNRWA rejected a Syrian government request to recognize the camp in 1960. Now depopulated, it was home to the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria. As of June 2002, there had been 112,550 registered refugees living in Yarmouk. During the Syrian Civil War, Yarmouk camp became the scene of intense fighting in 2012 between the Free Syrian Army and the PFLP-GC, supported by Syrian government forces. The camp was consequently taken over by various factions and deprived of supplies, resulting in hunger, disease and a high death rate, which caused many to flee. Jericho
