Malta In The Eurovision Song Contest
Malta has been represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 37 times since its debut in . The current Maltese participating broadcaster in the contest is the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). Malta has yet to win the contest, but is the only non-winning country to have achieved four top three results. Malta finished last on its first two attempts in and , and had a 16-year absence from the contest between and , when it returned. Malta has participated every year since. Public Broadcasting Services Limited (PBS) is the public broadcaster of Malta. PBS is funded by government grants and the sale of commercial airtime. Its TVM channel is Malta's most watched television channel, and its radio station Magic Malta enjoys huge popularity among local and foreign listeners. Each year on 13 December, PBS hosts an open day, where the public takes a visit in the building and have a look at the sets of the channels and radios. History PBS was founded on 11 November 1975 as Xandir Malta and became joint member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) together with the Maltese Broadcasting Authority (MBA). Joe Grech
Joseph Grech, Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika, MQR (9 February 1934 – 30 December 2024) was a Maltese singer. He is best known for having introduced the Maltese language to the Eurovision Song Contest 1971, the first appearance from Malta on this pan-European television event. Early years Grech was born in Cospicua, Malta on 9 February 1934. At a very early stage in his life, Grech started to play the trumpet with the Żejtun Band Club. However, he soon switched to singing. He was the first singer to win the first Malta Song Festival in 1960, a festival which was organized by the Żgħażagħ Ħaddiema Nsara, the local section of the Young Christian Workers. The festival was held at the Radio City Opera House in Ħamrun, Malta. Ten songs were presented in the semi-final of 3 November and another ten songs on the semi-final of 4 November. The Maltese participating broadcaster, Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), selected its entry for the contest through a national final. Georgina Abela
Georgina Abela (born 23 April 1959) is a Maltese singer and actress. She is best known for representing Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest on several occasions, either as an entrant, backing vocalist or songwriter. Career Abela began singing at a young age, and competed in children's festivals in her youth. As an adult, she started her singing career in the heavy metal and rock scene, continuing into the 1980s. In 1985, she gained exposure after singing in a TV show, and was able to perform in and clubs across Malta and festivals further afield. In 1991, Abela represented Malta at Eurovision, where she sang the duet "Could it be" with Paul Giordimaina. The duo came 6th in the competition. She returned to the contest the following year, this time as co-songwriter (with Raymond Mahoney) of Malta's song, "Little Child". Claudette Buttigieg (née Pace, 8 February 1968) is a Maltese member of parliament, Deputy Speaker, and former TV presenter and singer. Fabrizio Faniello
Fabrizio Faniello (born 27 April 1981) is a Maltese pop singer. He represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001 and 2006. Family Fabrizio Faniello is the eldest of three children born to Vincenzo and Anna Faniello. He has two younger sisters, Claudia and Miriana. Claudia is also a singer and has performed in various Maltese festivals already, including the Malta Song For Europe 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2017, representing the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Nazzareno Alessandro Micallef Garrett, better known by his stage name Renato Micallef (born 19 November 1951) is a Maltese pop singer. Renato has been active in the Maltese music scene since the age of 12. Renato has toured North America, Australia and the United Kingdom where his website claims he won an award for Singer Of The Year in 1980.
