Malibu U
''Malibu U'' is an American variety show that aired in the summer of 1967 on ABC. The series starred Ricky Nelson, and aired on Friday evenings from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. Overview In the series, Nelson starred as the "Dean of the Drop-Ins" of a fictional college called Malibu U. Regulars included Robie Porter as "President of the Student Body" and the Mali-beauties dancers. In each episode three well-known performers, called "Visiting Professors," sang. Two of the performers were filmed on the beach, and the third was filmed in another unusual location. On the July 28, 1967 episode Leonard Nimoy sang the novelty song The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Other guest stars included Annette Funicello, Don Ho and The Four Seasons with Frankie Valli. Some of the classes taught at Malibu U were surfing and sunbathing. Variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts including musical performances, sketch comedy, magic, acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. Buffalo Springfield was a Canadian-American Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1966 by Canadians Neil Young, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin (musician), Dewey Martin and Americans Stephen Stills and Richie Furay. The group, widely known for the song "For What It's Worth", released three albums and several singles from 1966 to 1968. Their music combined elements of folk music and country music with influences from the British Invasion and psychedelic rock. Like contemporary band the Byrds, they were key to the early development of folk rock. The band took their name from a steamroller parked outside their house. The Sunshine Company
The Sunshine Company was an American sunshine pop band from Los Angeles, California. Originally the duo of Mary Nance (November 7, 1947 – November 24, 2019) and Maury Manseau, the group later added the rhythm section of bassist Larry Sims and drummer Merel Bregante and signed to Imperial Records, releasing their debut album in 1967. They scored three hit singles on the U.S. singles chart over the next two years before disbanding after their third album, 1968's self-titled effort. Sims and Bregante later backed Loggins and Messina. History The group was discovered by the manager of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bill McEuen. The 5th Dimension is an American vocal group. Their music encompasses sunshine pop, pop soul, and psychedelic soul. They were an important crossover music act of the 1960s and 1970s, although both praised and derided for their particular musical approach and mass appeal. During the original group's heyday, they were twice invited to perform at the White House, and accepting those invitations was controversial during that era of social upheaval. Lesley Gore (born Lesley Sue Goldstein, May 2, 1946 – February 16, 2015) was an American singer and songwriter. The Happenings
The Happenings are a pop music group that originated in the 1960s. Members of the original group, created in the spring of 1961 and initially called "The Four Graduates" because all had just graduated from high school in Paterson, New Jersey, were Bob Miranda, David Libert, Tom Giuliano, and Ralph DiVito. In 1968 DiVito was replaced by Bernie LaPorta and Lenny Conforti also joined to play drums in the touring band. Both LaPorta and Conforti took a hiatus from the northern New Jersey band, the Emerald Experience, to play and tour with the Happenings. Frankie Randall (born Franklin Joseph Lisbona; January 11, 1938 – December 28, 2014) was an American singer and pianist. Career In 1964, Randall starred in '' Wild on the Beach'' and appeared in ''The Day of the Wolves'' (1971). He also appeared many times on the Dean Martin TV show, and hosted the summer version of the show when Martin was not available. He released dozens of RCA singles and albums from the 1960s onwards. Harpers Bizarre was an American sunshine pop band of the 1960s, best known for their Broadway/sunshine pop sound and their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)." Career Harpers Bizarre was formed out of the Tikis, a band from Santa Cruz, California, which had some local successes with Beatlesque songs in the mid 1960s.Sculatti, Gene (1997).
