Malcolm Island is an island along the northeast coastline of Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Located in the Queen Charlotte Strait, it is separated from Vancouver Island by the Broughton Strait, with Haddington Island and Cormorant Island situated in the middle. It has ferry access from the Vancouver Island community of Port McNeill. The island is located within the Mount Waddington Regional District. Queen Charlotte Strait
Queen Charlotte Strait is a strait between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada. It connects Queen Charlotte Sound with Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage and via them to the Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound. It forms part of the Inside Passage from Washington to Alaska. The term Queen Charlotte Strait is also used to refer to the general region and its many communities, notably of the Kwakwakaʼwakw peoples. Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Broughton Strait
Broughton Strait is a strait off the north coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, separating that island from Malcolm and Cormorant Islands, on the farther side of which is the larger Queen Charlotte Strait, which also lies beyond the western end of Broughton Strait, and the mouth of Knight Inlet. Farther east from Broughton Strait is the beginning of Johnstone Strait, which leads via Discovery Passage to the Strait of Georgia. Haddington Island (British Columbia)
Haddington Island () is a small volcanic island in the Canadian province of British Columbia, located in the Broughton Strait, and separated from Malcolm Island to the north by the Haddington Passage. It is located in the Mount Waddington Regional District. The closest major community to Haddington Island is Port McNeill. Geology Haddington Island is a member in the chain of eroded volcanoes that run from Brooks Peninsula northeastward across Vancouver Island to Port McNeill, called the Alert Bay Volcanic Belt. The existence of felsite and andesite at Haddington Island suggests it might have formed 3.7 million years ago as the Juan de Fuca and Explorer Plate to its west subducted under the North American Plate at the Cascadia subduction zone. Cormorant Island (British Columbia)
Cormorant Island is an island in Queen Charlotte Strait on the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. It has a total land area of about 4 square km and is located south of Malcolm Island and east of Port McNeill. Approximately 954 people (2016 census) live on the island, primarily in the village of Alert Bay and the ʼNamgis First Nation, 'Namgis First Nation. Port McNeill is a town in the North Island region of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada on Vancouver Island's northeast shore, on Queen Charlotte Strait. Sointula
Sointula is an isolated village on Malcolm Island in British Columbia, Canada. Lying between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland, northeast of Port McNeill and not far from Alert Bay, the island is part of the historic and present territory of the ‘Namgis First Nation. At the 2011 census, the village had a population of 576, down 3.0% from the 2006 census. History The name ''Sointula'' means "Place of Harmony" (literally 'the place of chord') in the Finnish language.
