''Neighbours'' is an Australian television soap opera that was first broadcast on 18 March 1985. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the serial in 1987, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by the show's executive producer Reg Watson. The third season of ''Neighbours'' began airing on 5 January 1987. Harold Bishop arrived during the same month. February saw the introductions of Bouncer and Henry Mitchell, son of established character Madge Mitchell. ''Neighbours'' is an Australian television soap opera that has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap '' Sons and Daughters''. Although successful in Melbourne, ''Neighbours'' underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. ''Neighbours'' became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame. Melanie Pearson
Melanie Pearson (also Mangel) is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera ''Neighbours'', played by Lucinda Cowden. She made her first appearance as Melanie during the episode broadcast on 30 July 1987. Cowden originally appeared in a guest role, with Melanie being introduced as a love interest of Henry Ramsay (Craig McLachlan). Cowden returned as a regular cast member and the character was made a secretary working for Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis). Ian Smith (actor)
Ian Smith (born 19 June 1938) is an Australian former actor, television producer and screenwriter. Smith is best known for his television roles most especially his lengthy tenure on serial ''Neighbours'' as Harold Bishop from 1987 until 1991, he returned as a regular again in 1996 and left in 2009, though has returned in guest parts in 2011, 2015, 2022, 2023 and 2024-2025 respectively. Previously, Smith had appeared on the cult series ''Prisoner'' in the recurring roles as Head of the Corrections Department, Ted Douglas. Smith also worked on that series as an executive producer and screenwriter. In 2023 Smith stated he would make some guest appearances in the relaunch of ''Neighbours'', but also said he was happy to call it a day. However in 2024 he returned to the role.
