Malcolm Cameron (Australian Politician)
Malcolm Duncan Cameron (12 July 1873 – 1 March 1935) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1922 to 1934, representing the electorate of Division of Barker, Barker for the Nationalist Party of Australia, Nationalist Party (1922–1931) and its successor the United Australia Party (1931–1934). Cameron was born at German Creek, South Australia, German Creek, where his father managed a pastoral property, and was educated at the Tantanoola, South Australia, Tantanoola school. He began farming at German Creek, before acquiring property at Glencoe, South Australia, Glencoe when John Riddoch divided the former Glencoe Station. Division Of Barker
The Division of Barker is an Australian electoral division in the south-east of South Australia. The division was established on 2 October 1903, when South Australia's original single multi-member division was split into seven single-member divisions. It is named for Captain Collet Barker, a British military officer and early explorer, prior to the British Settlement of South Australia, of the southern Mount Lofty Ranges, Fleurieu Peninsula and the region at the mouth of the Murray River near the Coorong where he died in 1831 whilst on active duty after successfully solo swimming the channel of water and went compass in hand over a sandhill. Farmers And Producers Political Union
The Farmers and Producers Political Union (FPPU) was an independent conservative agrarian political party founded in South Australia in reaction to Labor, keen to fend off a perceived threat to the FPPU's interests against a rising labour movement and Labor. The rural stockowners and graziers were concerned at the concentration of the Australasian National League (ANL) on the metropolitan electorates and urban issues, leading to the formation of the FPPU which had a conservative political agenda, and was absolutely opposed to franchise reform. It was essentially the rural wing of the ANL. The FPPU was created in 1904 and lasted until after the 1910 election when it merged with the Liberal and Democratic Union and the National Defence League to become the Liberal Union. On their own the FPPU won an 8.8 percent vote at both the 1905 and 1906 election, winning nine and five seats respectively. 1934 Australian Federal Election
The 1934 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 15 September 1934. All 74 seats in the House of Representatives, and 18 of the 36 seats in the Senate were up for election. The incumbent United Australia Party led by Prime Minister of Australia Joseph Lyons formed a minority government, with 33 out of 74 seats in the House. The opposition Australian Labor Party (ALP) led by James Scullin saw its share of the primary vote fall to an even lower number than in the 1931 election, due to the Lang Labor split. However, it was able to pick up an extra four seats on preferences and therefore improve on its position. Almost two months after the election, the UAP entered into a coalition with the Country Party, led by Earle Page. National Party (South Australia)
The National Party was a political party active in South Australia from 1917 to 1923. As with the federal National Labor Party, it was created in the wake of the Australian Labor Party split over conscription, resulting in the February 1917 expulsion from the South Australian Labor Party of the Premier, Crawford Vaughan, and his supporters. It was initially known as the National Labor Party like its federal counterpart, but was renamed at a conference in June 1917. The party initially continued in government under Vaughan, but was subsequently defeated in parliament in July 1917, and thereafter served as the junior partner in a coalition with the Liberal Union under Archibald Peake. After the 1915 election, the ALP had 26 of 46 House of Assembly members, of whom all but seven defected to National Labor.
