Malcolm (film)
''Malcolm'' is a 1986 Australian comedy film, written by the husband-and-wife team of David Parker and Nadia Tass, and directed by Nadia Tass (in her debut feature film as director). The film stars Colin Friels as Malcolm, a tram enthusiast who becomes involved with a pair of would-be bank robbers. His co-stars are Lindy Davies and John Hargreaves. The film won the 1986 Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film, and seven other AFI awards including Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. Plot At the start of the film, Malcolm is working for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (then operator of Melbourne's trams). Malcolm, who has autism (see "Development & Production" section below), is obsessed with trams, but he is also a mechanical genius whose modest inner-city cottage is fitted with a variety of remarkable gadgets. Nadia Tass
Nadia Tass (born Tassopoulou or Tassopoulos; ), is an Australian theatre and film director and film producer. She mostly makes films with her writer-producer husband David Parker, through their production company Cascade Films. Tass is known for the films ''Malcolm'' (1986) and '' The Big Steal'' (1990), as well as an extensive body of work in the theatre, both in Australia and internationally. Early life and education Nadia Tassopoulou (or Tassopoulos) was born in the village of Lofoi, near Florina, in Macedonia, northern Greece. Aged eight, she moved with her parents to Melbourne, Australia, in 1966. Her original surname is Tassopoulos. She has some Russian heritage. Ian McFadyen (born 8 July 1948) is an Australian television writer, actor, director and producer. He is best known as the creator and producer of the Australian television series '' The Comedy Company'', which he also directed and wrote episodes for, and performed in, which ran from 16 February 1988 to 11 November 1990. David Johnston (born 4 December 1941) is a Welsh-born Australian retired television news presenter. Johnston, known as ''DJ'' to hundreds of thousands of viewers and colleagues, presented his last bulletin on the Seven Network on 23 September 2005. He and wife Eve retired in a property at Bendigo to enjoy country life and be close to their daughter, her husband and their grandchildren. Edward Kelly (December 185411 November 1880) was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader, bank robber and convicted police-murderer.
