Malaysian Trades Union Congress
The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC; ), is a national trade union centre in Malaysia. It was formed in 1949 and was originally known as the ''Malayan Trades Union Council''. It then changed its name to the ''Malayan Trades Union Congress'' in 1958, and then to its current name with the formation of Malaysia. It operates as a federation of hundreds of affiliated trade unions, officially registered under the Societies Act, 1955. MTUC is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. History The inception of the MTUC occurred during a tumultuous period marked by the declaration of the First Emergency against insurgent communist activities. The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC; ; ; ) is the world's largest trade union federation. History The federation was formed on 1 November 2006 out of the merger of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the World Confederation of Labour (WCL). Govindasamy Rajasekaran
Govindasamy Rajasekaran (1941 or 1942 – 6 August 2023) was a Malaysian trade union leader. Rajasekaran was the founding general secretary of the Malaysian Metal Industry Employees' Union in 1963. The union is affiliated with the Malaysian Trade Union Congress, of which Rajasekaran was elected as deputy general secretary in 1980, and then general secretary in 1992. Rajasekaran served as MTUC secretary-general from 1992 to 2010 and often worked alongside another veteran trade unionist, former MTUC president Zainal Rampak. Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud
Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud is a former trade unionist and Senator from Malaysia. He led the country’s top umbrella union body, the Malaysian Trades Union Congress, as president from 2005 to 2010. He also served a single term as Senator in the Dewan Negara from 2012 to 2015. Early life Syed Shahir was born in Kampung Sega, Raub, Pahang, in 1952. A young socialist, he became involved in the National Union of Transport Equipment & Allied Workers in his early 20s. Fong Chan Onn
Fong Chan Onn (, born 29 February 1944) is a Malaysian politician and a former Minister of Human Resources. He is a former vice-president of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), a component party of the then-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He served as a Member of Parliament for Selandar from 1999 to 2004 and Alor Gajah from 2004 until 2013. Trade Unions In Malaysia
Trade unions in Malaysia are regulated by the Trade Unions Act of 1959 and the Industrial Relations Act of 1967. Membership While the Malaysian constitution guarantees the rights of all Malaysians to form and join a trade union, there are several restrictions imposed by the laws relating to trade unions, i.e., the Trade Unions Act of 1959 and the Industrial Relations Act of 1967. The restrictive Trade Unions Act does not allow general unions for workers. Membership of any trade union is confined to only those who are employees of a particular industry, establishment, trade and occupation. For example, a bank employee could only be a member of a banking union, but cannot be a member of an airline union or teachers union while a hotel employee, a timber worker or a labourer could not be members of the same union.
