Malaysian Popular Music
Malaysian popular music, sometimes called Malaysian pop () or abbreviated as M-pop, refers to popular music forms in the Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia. Although pop music in various languages, such as Mandopop, is popular and has been produced in Malaysia, Malaysian pop refers to music recorded primarily in the Malay language in Malaysia. Malaysian pop covers a diversity of genres, such as pop, ballad, Malaysian folk, hip hop, EDM, R&B, and rock. Origin and influences Malaysian popular music has its origin in local musical traditions and popular European music styles. Some early musical styles, performers, and songs of kroncong and ''lagu-lagu rakyat'' (folk songs) were common to the musical cultures of Malaysia and Indonesia. British Malaya
The term "British Malaya" (; ) loosely describes a set of states on the Malay Peninsula and the island of Singapore that were brought under British Empire, British hegemony or control between the late 18th and the mid-20th century. Salmah Ismail
Salmah binti Ismail ( Jawi: سلمه بنت إسماعيل; 22 January 1935 – 25 April 1983), better known by her stage name Saloma, was a Singaporean-Malaysian singer, film actress, trendsetter and a fashion icon who became well known in the late 1950s. Saloma was well known for her singing ability, which was depicted as "lemak merdu", (a full, rather thick but sweet voice). She was signed with EMI music records and since then released numerous EP's such as Dendang Saloma (1957), Bunga Negara (1963) and Aslirama (1972). Some of her most popular songs throughout her career included ‘Selamat Pengantin Baru’ and ‘Bila Larut Malam’. The cinema of Malaysia consists of feature films produced in Malaysia, shot in the languages Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, various indigenous languages, and English. Malaysia produces about 60 feature films and 300–400 television dramas and serials per year, in addition to the in-house productions of individual television stations. The country also holds its own annual national level film awards, known as the Malaysia Film Festival. Marfuah Makarim (1923 – 10 December 2015), better known by the stage name Momo Latiff, was an Indonesian-born Singaporean singer and actress who was active in the 1950s and 1960s. Gramophone Company
The Gramophone Company Limited was a British phonograph manufacturer and record label, founded in April 1898 by Emil Berliner. It was one of the earliest record labels. The company purchased the His Master's Voice painting and trademark rights in 1899, using its artwork and creating the His Master's Voice sub-label for its phonographs and releases in 1909, replacing its previous "Recording Angel" trademark. The company had an affiliation with the American Victor Talking Machine Company, who also began using the artwork. Frederick William Gaisberg (1 January 1873 – 2 September 1951) was an American musician, recording engineer and one of the earliest classical music producers for the gramophone. He did not use the term 'producer', and was not an impresario like his protégé Walter Legge of EMI or an innovator like John Culshaw of Decca. Gaisberg concentrated on talent-scouting and persuading performers to make recordings for the newly invented Gramophone. Dangdut
Dangdut () is a genre of Indonesian folk music that is partly derived and fused from Hindustani, Arabic, and, to a lesser extent, Javanese, Malay, Minangkabau, Sundanese and local folk music. Dangdut is the most popular musical genre in Indonesia and very popular in other Maritime Southeast Asian countries because of its melodious instrumentation and vocals.
