Malaysian Airline System Flight 653 (MH653/MAS653) was a scheduled domestic flight from Penang to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, operated by Malaysia Airlines, Malaysian Airline System (MAS). On the evening of 4 December 1977, the Boeing 737, Boeing 737-200 aircraft flying the service crashed at Tanjung Kupang, Johor, Malaysia, while purportedly being diverted by hijackers to Singapore. It was the first fatal air crash for Malaysia Airlines (as the airline is now known), with all 93 passengers and 7 crew killed. It is also the deadliest aviation disaster to occur on Malaysian soil. Batu Arang
Batu Arang is a town in Gombak District, Selangor, Malaysia, that is located about from the capital Kuala Lumpur. Coal was first discovered in the region in 1908, when British authorities found large deposits of coal reserves that could be commercially viable and fuel a railway system. The town was established when the British started mining operations. In 1915, a railway system linking Batu Arang and Kuang was built to transport coal to the rest of the country. As coal output and demand increased, rail services to and from Kuala Lumpur expanded. Air Vietnam Flight 706 was a Boeing 727 that crashed on September 15, 1974 after three hijackers detonated hand grenades as it was approaching Phan Rang Air Base in South Vietnam for an emergency landing. All 67 passengers and 8 crew members aboard the aircraft were killed in the crash. Hijacking and crash Le Duc Tan, a ranger in the South Vietnamese army who had recently been demoted from captain to lieutenant for the theft of two cars in Da Nang, smooth-talked his way past security checkpoints. Mario García Incháustegui (c. September 1924 – 4 December 1977) was a Cuban Ambassador to Japan from 1974 until his death in 1977. Life Mario García Incháustegui was born to a wealthy Spanish housewares importer. He was married to Gladys Delgado Ortiz. Incháustegui studied law at the University of Havana and received his doctorates in both civil and consular law. He was a judge under the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. In the 1950s he went to Caracas, Venezuela. He returned to Cuba in 1959 and was appointed judge in the Oriente province and the extraordinary envoy. Incháustegui was also appointed as Ministre plénipotentiaire in Montevideo. Ali bin Ahmad (29 June 1930 – 4 December 1977) was a Malaysian politician. Political career Ali was first elected to Parliament when he won the Pontian Selatan seat in the 1964 Malaysian general election under the Alliance ticket, a seat he successfully defended in the 1969 Malaysian general election unopposed. Ali was the UMNO Division chief of Pontian after Pontian Selatan and Pontian Utara Parliamentary seat were merged before 1974 Malaysian general election. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was a scheduled international flight serving the route Addis Ababa–Nairobi–Brazzaville–Lagos–Abidjan. On 23 November 1996, the aircraft serving the flight, a Boeing 767-200ER, was hijacked en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi by three Ethiopians seeking asylum in Australia. The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near Grande Comore, Comoros Islands, due to fuel exhaustion. 125 of the 175 on board died in the water landing, including all three hijackers and six of the 12 crew.
