Malayali Australians (Malayalee Australian) are Australian people, Australians whose ancestors, or themselves, identify as ethnic Malayalis (also called Malayali, Keralites) and speak Malayalam. Malayali Australians constitute one group of Indian Australians. Malayalis originate from the South Indian state of Kerala, and are one of the fastest-growing populations in Australia with 78,738 speakers as per the 2021 census. The majority of this population had arrived in Australia after the year 2007. The majority of this population is associated with the 25-39 year age cohort (53%), and the estimated average age of this population is approximately 32 years. The Malayali people (; also spelt Malayalee and sometimes known by the demonym Keralite) are a Dravidian languages, Dravidian ethnolinguistic group originating from the present-day state of Kerala and Union Territory of Lakshadweep in India, occupying its southwestern Malabar coast. Peter Varghese
Peter Varghese (born 19 March 1956) is an Australian retired diplomat and public servant. He was the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 3 December 2012 to 22 July 2016. He announced in November 2015 that he would leave the position in July 2016 to become the chancellor of the University of Queensland. Early life and education Varghese was born in Kenya to ethnic Asian Indian parents of Nasrani Malayalee origin. Mathai Varghese is a mathematician at the University of Adelaide. His first most influential contribution is the Mathai–Quillen formalism, which he formulated together with Daniel Quillen, and which has since found applications in index theory and topological quantum field theory. Sajeev Koshy (6 May 1956 – 21 February 2023) was an Indian-born specialist endodontist residing in Australia. He was a public dentist, clinical director and a social advocate. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2016 and promoted to Member (AM) in 2025. Education Koshy completed his schooling from St Joseph's High School, and graduated from Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
