Malacosoma Incurva
''Malacosoma incurva'', the southwestern tent caterpillar moth, is a species of moth of the family Lasiocampidae. It was first described by Henry Edwards in 1882. It is found in south-western North America, including Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. Bug Guide/ref> The wingspan is about 27 mm. Eastern Tent Caterpillar
The eastern tent caterpillar (''Malacosoma americanum'') is a species of moth in the family Lasiocampidae, the tent caterpillars or lappet moths. It is univoltine, producing one generation per year. It is a tent caterpillar, a social species that forms communal nests in the branches of trees. It is sometimes confused with the spongy moth (whose larvae look similar) and the fall webworm (which also builds tents), and may be erroneously referred to as a bagworm, which is the common name applied to unrelated caterpillars in the family Psychidae. The moths oviposit almost exclusively on trees in the plant family Rosaceae, particularly cherry (''Prunus'') and apple (''Malus''). The caterpillars are hairy with areas of blue, white, black and orange. The blue and white colors are structural colors created by the selective filtering of light by microtubules that arise on the ball cuticle. Social behavior Tent caterpillars are among the most social of larvae. The adult moth lays her ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Lackey Moth
The lackey moth (''Malacosoma neustria'') is a moth in the family Lasiocampidae. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae''. It is common across southern Britain and central Europe. ''Malacosoma'' species are notable for their caterpillars which are brightly coloured and form silken tents to regulate their temperature. ''Malacosoma neustria'' caterpillars are brown with blue, orange and white stripes. The adults are a fairly uniform brown. The larvae feed mainly on trees and shrubs from within their tents. Subspecies *''Malacosoma neustria neustria'' *''Malacosoma neustria flavescens'' Grünberg, 1912 (Morocco, Algeria) *''Malacosoma neustria formosana'' Matsumura, 1932 (Taiwan) Distribution and habitat The lackey moth is widely distributed across Europe, Asia and North Africa. Its habitat is the edges of woodland, bushy grassland, coppices, hedgerows and road verges. The caterpillar's food plants include apple, pear, plum, willow, h ... Malacosoma Californicum
''Malacosoma californicum'', the western tent caterpillar, is a moth of the family Lasiocampidae. It is a tent caterpillar. The Western Tent Caterpillar is found in southern Canada, the western United States, and parts of northern Mexico. There are currently six recognized subspecies of ''M. californicum''. Western tent caterpillars are gregarious and will spend a large portion of their time with other caterpillars in silken tents constructed during their larval stage. Western tent caterpillars are univoltine, going through a single generation per year. Adults emerge in the late summer to copulate and lay eggs. Adult moths will preferentially lay their eggs on the sunny side of their host trees. Eggs will lay in diapause over the winter and hatch the following spring. Population sizes of western tent caterpillar can reach outbreak proportions, where populations reach very high numbers and large scale defoliation occurs. Severe outbreaks can cause defoliation of host trees howev ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Tent Caterpillar
Tent caterpillars are moderately sized caterpillars, or moth larvae, belonging to the genus ''Malacosoma'' in the family Lasiocampidae. Twenty-six species have been described, six of which occur in North America and the rest in Eurasia. Some species are considered to have subspecies as well. They are often considered pests for their habit of defoliating trees. They are among the most social of all caterpillars and exhibit many noteworthy behaviors. Tent caterpillars are readily recognized because they are social, colorful, diurnal and build conspicuous silk tents in the branches of host trees. Some species, such as the eastern tent caterpillar, ''Malacosoma americanum'', and caterpillars of the small eggar moth, ''Eriogaster lanestris'', build a single large tent which is typically occupied through the whole of the larval stage, while others build a series of small tents that are sequentially abandoned. Whereas tent caterpillars make their tents in the nodes and branches of a ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Malacosoma Castrense
''Malacosoma castrense'' (or ''Malacosoma castrensis'' if adopt as original spelling), the ground lackey, is a moth of the family Lasiocampidae. It is a tent caterpillar found in Europe. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus Carl Linnaeus (23 May 1707 – 10 January 1778), also known after ennoblement in 1761 as Carl von Linné,#Blunt, Blunt (2004), p. 171. was a Swedish biologist and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming o ... in his 1758 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae''. The moth's habitats are salt marshes and estuaries. Distribution and habitat The habitat is salt marsh and estuary. It is not particularly common due to this specialist habitat, but neither is it a threatened species. Life cycle and behaviour Eggs are laid in rings around plant stalks, and can survive immersion in salt water. The blue-grey larvae feed on various shrubs and herbaceous plants such as heather, cypress spurge, and '' Lotus'' species, ...
