Maitland B. Bleecker
Maitland B. Bleecker (25 January 1903 – 19 October 2002) was an American inventor and author who was instrumental in modern helicopter design. Bleecker also holds a number of other patents, one including a boat launching device and another for a reaction propulsion device. Biography Bleecker graduated from University of Michigan in 1924 and secured a position with National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley Field, VA. He then joined Curtiss Aeroplane Division where he developed and constructed a prototype helicopter known as the Curtiss-Bleecker SX-5-1 Helicopter at Garden City, NY. This helicopter flew successfully, but the project was abandoned because of The Great Depression. In 1937 he founded Atlantic Casting and Engineering Corporation and retired in 1945. Upon his retirement, he purchased of land near West Milford, N.J. where he constructed Lake Sonoma, started a trout hatchery, and operated the Tapawingo Fishing Preserve. The Curtiss-Bleecker Helicopter was an American prototype rotary wing aircraft, introduced in 1926. The thrust of the aircraft was distributed from a central mounted engine through shafts to propellers mounted on each rotor blade. A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontally spinning rotors. This allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forward, backward and laterally. West Milford
West Milford is a township in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 25,850, reflecting a decline of 560 (−2.1%) from the 26,410 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 980 (+3.9%) from the 25,430 counted in the 1990 Census. It is the largest in the county by total area, covering and more than 40% of the county. History West Milford started out as New Milford in what was then western Bergen County in the 18th century, having been settled by disenchanted Dutch from Milford, New Jersey (later renamed by the British as Newark). Norvin Green State Forest
Norvin Green State Forest is a state forest in Bloomingdale, New Jersey, United States, near the Wanaque Reservoir. It is part of the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion. The forest is accessible by foot only; it is part of the Wyanokie Wilderness Area and contains an extensive trail system built on old logging roads, several of which connect with trails in The New Weis Center and reservoir property. The trails climb hills up to and provide views of the Manhattan skyline, the Wanaque Reservoir, Burnt Meadow Brook and Lake Sonoma.
