Mait Malmsten
Mait Malmsten (born 6 September 1972 in Viljandi) is an Estonian actor. Malmsten comes from a family of actors. His father is actor Rein Malmsten. His paternal grandparents were actors Franz Malmsten and Eva Meil. His great-uncle was actor Hugo Malmsten and his great-aunt was actress Lydia Bock. In 1994 he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Since 1993 he is working as an actor in Estonian Drama Theatre. Besides theatrical appearances he is also played in numerous films and television series, e.g. '' Wikmani poisid''. He is married to actress Harriet Toompere and the couple have two sons, Franz and Hugo, who are also both television and film actors. 1944 (film)
''1944'' is a 2015 Estonian war drama film directed by Elmo Nüganen. The film first premiered in February 2015 in Berlin, Germany, before its release in Estonia and other Northern European countries. It was selected as the Estonian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. As the Soviet Union advances to recapture Estonia from its German occupiers, with huge losses on both sides, the film explores the mental conflicts of young Estonians. Some have volunteered or been conscripted into the German military, most with little commitment to the Nazi regime. Others have volunteered or been conscripted into the Soviet forces, again with little commitment to the Communist regime. Whichever side wins will regard the Estonians on the opposing side as traitors, liable to execution or deportation. Neither side offers the Estonians autonomy from foreign control. ''Melchior the Apothecary'' ( et, Apteeker Melchior) is a 2022 Estonian historical mystery film. It is the first instalment of the Melchior trilogy, based on the novels by Indrek Hargla. The film focuses on apothecary Melchior Wakenstede, who solves crimes in medieval Tallinn. The film is directed by Elmo Nüganen. Background The film was set to premiere in October 2021, but was delayed to April 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The second part of the trilogy is scheduled to be released in August, and the third in October, making it the first time in Estonia film history where an entire trilogy will premiere within a single calendar year. Filming locations in Tallinn included St. Catherine's Monastery, Danish King's Garden, Town Hall Square and Pikk Jalg street. Some scenes were also filmed in Kuressaare Castle.
