Mansfield Railway Line
The Mansfield railway line is a closed branch railway line situated in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia. Constructed by the Victorian Railways, it branches from the Seymour line at station, and runs east from the town of to . The line was primarily built to provide a general goods and passenger service to townships in the area. History The line was opened in 6 stages from November 1883 to October 1891, and closed in November 1978. The first stage of the line was opened from to in 1883, being extended in stages from 1889 though , , and to reach in 1891. A short 7 kilometre long branch was also opened from Cathkin to in 1890, being extended another 7 kilometres to in 1909. The line was a result of a decade of local lobbying, and provided improved access for agricultural products from the region to Melbourne markets. Mansfield Railway Station, Victoria
Mansfield is a former railway station in Mansfield, Victoria, Australia. The former station building now serves tourists to the community as a visitor centre. The station is of a traditional timber design, and features many original fixtures including pressed metal interior walls, original doors and timber panelling and a full length signal bay window. Original light fittings are also in place inside the station building. Additional structures on site include a large goods shed, bearing a warning notice "DANGER - UNSTABLE STRUCTURE - DO NOT ENTER". A crane is also located in what was the goods yard on the Mansfield goods platform. The station is the terminus of the former Tallarook - Yea - Mansfield Line. The Mansfield train service ran its last service in 1978, with a Walker Rail Motor on stretches of track that in parts had 15 mph speed restrictions due to lack of track maintenance by the then state government owned Victorian Railways. Maindample is a town in north east Victoria (Australia). It is located in the Mansfield Shire local government area, north east of the state capital Melbourne. South, just outside the town, are twin hills known as The Paps. The Aboriginal name for these is Maindample. The Maroondah Highway passes near the town on route to the lower alpine region of Victoria. History The area was a hunting and gathering ground for the Taungurung people. Maindample was part of a 140,000 acre pastoral run taken up by overlanders and squattors James Watson and Alexander Hunter in 1840 acting as agents for a group of Scottish aristocrat investors. Watson and Hunter ran into financial difficulties in the economic depression that began in 1840 and were insolvent by March 1843. The property was divided into four separate properties of which Maindample was one.
