Mailors Flat
Mailors Flat is a locality in western Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Moyne local government area, in what is commonly known as the Western District (Victoria), Western District. Mailors Flat is 10 km north of Warrnambool. It was named after Robert Mailor who took up a pastoral run in 1842. By the 1870s, Mailor's pastoral run was broken up into smaller farms. This brought more families into the area and a school was opened in 1873. After the WW2 , the Warrnambool Airport was laid out to the west of the township. In 2006/07 Mailors Flat boasted the highest annual income in the Western District. A Local Moyne Shire councillor Jim Doukas suggested the reason was that many locals ran successful businesses in Warrnambool and moved out to Mailors Flat for the larger housing blocks and lifestyle. Electoral District Of South-West Coast
The electoral district of South-West Coast is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was created prior to the 2002 election in order to replace the abolished seats of Portland and Warrnambool. The seat is dominated by the town of Warrnambool, but also includes Portland, Port Fairy, Koroit, Heywood and Macarthur. South-West Coast is located in ancestrally Liberal territory, and was thus a natural choice for Portland's former member, Denis Napthine, to transfer for the 2002 election. He barely held onto his seat in the Labor landslide of that year, seeing his margin reduced to only 0.7 percent. However, it has reverted to its previous form as a safe Liberal seat. Napthine subsequently served as Premier of Victoria from 2013 to 2014. Following his government's election loss to Labor in November 2014, Napthine resigned from parliament on 3 September 2015. The Division of Wannon is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first Federal election. The division was named after the Wannon River. For the first half-century after Federation, it regularly traded hands between the Australian Labor Party and the conservative parties. However, a 1955 redistribution removed most of the seat's Labor-friendly territory, and it has been a safe Liberal seat for most of its history since then. The seat's most notable member was Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, to date the last prime minister from a country seat. Woolsthorpe, Victoria
Woolsthorpe () is a small town in the Shire of Moyne, Victoria, Australia. It is situated at the intersection of the Woolsthorpe-Heywood, Koroit-Woolsthorpe, and Warrnambool-Caramut Roads, on the banks of Spring Creek. There is a local pub, the National Hotel. At the , Woolsthorpe had a population of 422, down from 694 in 2006. The nearest large town is Warrnambool 26.5 kilometres further south. British colonisation of the vicinity began in May 1841 when Robert Whitehead, an English squatter, established a sheep station which he named Spring Creek. Whitehead's overseer reported that there were a large number of Aboriginal huts on the banks of the creek when they first arrived and that they had driven the Aborigines away with gunfire. Winslow, Victoria
Winslow is a locality in western Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Moyne local government area, in what is commonly known as the Western District. Winslow is 17 km north of Warrnambool. It is believed that it was named after Winslow in Buckinghamshire, England. The original occupants of the Winslow area were the Omegarrerer clan of Aboriginal Australians. British colonisation began in 1840 when Nicholas McCann, Henry Loughnan and Lewis Lynch arrived in the region to set up a sheep station they named Greenhill. They encountered a region that was well populated with Aboriginal people who had constructed many fishing weirs along the creeks in the area. McCann told the approximately 75 native people who approached them, to leave and hostilities began soon afterwards. McCann was nearly speared and concluded that to stay on the property he would have to shoot "the blacks indiscriminately". The Shire of Moyne is a local government area in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia, located in the south-western part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 16,887. The Western District comprises western regions of the Australian state of Victoria. It is said to be an illdefined district, sometimes incorrectly referred to as an economic region,.
