Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary
Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary is a Wildlife sanctuaries of India, wildlife sanctuary located in Latehar district of Jharkhand. It is part of Betla National Park. It was declared to be a wildlife sanctuary in 1976 for the protection of the Indian wolf. It is the only wolf sanctuary in the country. History In 1976, the sanctuary was declared a wolf sanctuary for the protection of the Indian wolf (''Canis lupus pallipes'') population. It is part of Betla National Park. It is spread over approx. 63 square kilometres. There are large numbers of wolf dens in the park, where the packs nest and rear their young, and where males court females during the breeding season, between November and February. According to the first count in 1979, there were 49 wolves in the sanctuary. The total population increased substantially over the next several decades, reaching 568 by 2004. Indian Wolf
The Indian wolf (''Canis lupus pallipes'') is a subspecies of gray wolf that ranges from Southwest Asia to the Indian Subcontinent. It is intermediate in size between the Himalayan wolf and the Arabian wolf, and lacks the former's luxuriant winter coat due to it living in warmer conditions. Within this subspecies, the "Indian plains wolf" is genetically basal to all other extant ''Canis lupus'' apart from the older-lineage Himalayan wolf, with both proposed as separate species. The Indian wolf travels in smaller packs and is less vocal than other variants of the gray wolf, and has a reputation for being cunning. The Indian wolf is one of the most endangered populations of gray wolf in the world. Latehar District
Latehar district is one of the 24 districts of Jharkhand state in eastern India, and Latehar town is the administrative headquarters of this district. This district is part of Palamu division. Latehar district is situated on longitude 84° 31' E and 23° 44.4' N latitude. The area of the district is 3660 km², with a population of 726,978 (2011 census). Betla National Park
Betla National Park is a national park located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau in the Latehar and Palamu district of Jharkhand, India. The park hosts a wide variety of wildlife. History Initially comprising of the Palamu Tiger Reserve, an additional was added to the park in 1989 and of the Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary. Betla was one of the first national parks in India to become a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, in 1974. The park is under administration of the Forest Department. Flora The forests of the park have a vast range of vegetation consisting of sal and bamboo as the major components along with a number of medicinal plants.
