Mahnomen ( ) is a city in Mahnomen County, Minnesota, United States, along the Wild Rice River. The population was 1,240 at the 2020 census. It is the seat of Mahnomen County. U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota State Highway 200 are two of the main routes in Mahnomen. History The name "Mahnomen" comes from , the Ojibwe word for wild rice. A post office called Mahnomen has been in operation since 1904. Mahnomen City Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Education The city is served by Mahnomen ISD 432. Geography Mahnomen is in the western part of its county, along U.S. Route 59, which leads north to Erskine and south to Detroit Lakes. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; from 1935 to 1939, then known as the Work Projects Administration from 1939 to 1943) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The WPA's first appropriation in 1935 was $4.9 billion (about $15 per person in the U.S., around 6.7 percent of the 1935 GDP). The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) is a Nonprofit organization, nonprofit Educational institution, educational and cultural institution dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. state of Minnesota.
