Mahmudlu, Shamkir
Mahmudlu is a village and municipality in the Shamkir Rayon of Azerbaijan. It has a population of 3,252. History Mahmudlu village is located in the North-West of Azerbaijan in Shamkir district, 21 kilometers from the center of the district, on the right bank of the Shamkir river, on the Ganja-Gazakh plain. The population is 3259 people (as at 1 January 2005). The economy is based on animal husbandry, crop production, vineculture and horticulture. The village has a high school, a club, a library, a medical center, an ancient cemetery, a bridge, a monument to the martyrs, several artesians, various commercial and domestic facilities. The village has historically consisted of nine small tribes madmudlu, mashadigurbanli, kelbali, allakululi, gazakhli, yekenamazli, pusteli, yarakhmedli, gadzhymamedli. Shamkir District ( az, Şəmkir rayonu) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north-west of the country and belongs to the Gazakh-Tovuz Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Gadabay, Tovuz, Samukh, Goygol, and Dashkasan. Its capital and largest city is Shamkir. As of 2020, the district had a population of 219,500. Zangezur
Zangezur ( hy, Զանգեզուր) is a historical and geographical region in Eastern Armenia on the slopes of the Zangezur Mountains which largely corresponds to the Syunik Province of the Republic of Armenia. It was ceded to Russia by Qajar Iran according the Treaty of Gulistan in 1813. In Soviet times, the Goris, Kapan, Meghri and Sisian regions of the Armenian SSR were located within Zangezur, which in 1995 became part of the Syunik Province of Armenia. Etymology There are several theories about of the origin of the name Zangezur. According to Armenian scholar Ghevont Alishan, Zangezur is derived from the name of Dzagadzor fortress (now a village near Goris), which was named after a patriarch of the Sisak clan, Dzagik. Over time the name Dzagadzor changed and became Zangezur. Uruch Beg Bayad (also spelled Oruch or Oruj), later known by his baptized name of Don Juan (1560–1604) was a late 16th and early 17th century Iranian figure in Iran and Spain. He is also known as ''Faisal Nazary''. A native of Iran, and from the Bayat Qizilbash clan,. In 1599 Shah Abbas I sent an envoy to Europe headed by the English traveler Anthony Shirley and Hossein Ali Beg Bayat. Uruch Beg Bayat as a cousin of the latter was part of the delegation. The envoy was equipped with letters to rulers of the Kingdoms of Spain, England, Scotland, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Tsardom of Muscovy and the Republic of Venice.
