Mahinda Rajapaksa
Mahinda Rajapaksa (; ; born Percy Mahendra Rajapaksa; 18 November 1945) is a Sri Lankan politician. He served as the sixth President of Sri Lanka from 2005 to 2015; the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2005, 2018, and 2019 to 2022; the Leader of the Opposition (Sri Lanka), Leader of the Opposition from 2002 to 2004 and 2018 to 2019, and the Minister of Finance (Sri Lanka), Minister of Finance from 2005 to 2015 and 2019 to 2021. Mahinda Samarasinghe
His Excellency Mahinda Buddhadasa Samarasinghe (; born 30 January 1956) is a former MP and the current Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States and Mexico and High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago. Prior to his diplomatic appointment, he had a long career in Sri Lankan politics. He was formerly a member of Parliament from the Kalutara Electoral District as a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, and the SLPP chief organiser for the Panadura Electorate in Kalutara. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena (born 10 October 1945) is a Sri Lankan politician and land proprietor. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from 2020 to 2024. Political career He first entered parliament in 1983 as part of the Hakmana United National Party and has been active in politics for more than 30 years. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was a young MP when he openly criticised the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord for establishing a new provincial councils system in Sri Lanka. He along with Chandrakumara Wijeya Gunawardena, the member for Kamburupitiya voted against the bill in Parliament becoming the only two government members who voted against it. Mahinda V Of Anuradhapura
Mahinda V was King of Anuradhapura in the 11th century. He was the last king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom as well as from the House of Lambakanna II. In 993, he fled to Ruhuna, the southern part of the country, following a large scale mutiny by his army. A Chola invasion led by Rajaraja Chola I captured Anuradhapura taking advantage of the 11 year civil war and subsequent turmoil that happened after Anuradhapura fell into anarchy. He was later taken prisoner and taken to India, where he died as a prisoner in 1029. The Mahavamsa records that the rule of Mahinda V was weak and he was unable to even organize the collecting of taxes. The country was in a state of extreme poverty and his army refused to follow orders due to lack of wages. Mahindananda Aluthgamage
Mahindananda Aluthgamage (born 21 November 1964) was a Sri Lankan politician and the Minister of Sports. He has also served as Deputy Minister of Power and Energy. He was elected as a Member of Parliament representing the Kandy Electoral District. He was educated at Gangasiripura Vidyalaya Gampola and Royal College Colombo. He lost his position as a minister in 2015 when President Mahinda Rajapaksha was defeated in the 2015 presidential election. He is well known for his ability to speak Sinhala, Tamil and English fluently and gained popularity among the Tamil community for his political rallies in Northern Province. On 29 May 2025, Aluthgamage was convicted of corruption by the Colombo High Court and was sentenced to twenty years of rigorous imprisonment. Mahinda (Buddhist Monk)
Mahinda () (285 BCE – 205 BCE) was an Indian Buddhist monk depicted in Buddhist sources as bringing Buddhism to Sri Lanka. He was a Mauryan prince and the first-born son of Emperor Ashoka from his first wife Queen Devi, and the older brother of Princess Sanghamitra. Mahinda was sent as a Buddhist missionary to the Anuradhapura Kingdom in Sri Lanka. Mahinda attained arhatship and resided at Mihintale. He played an important role in proliferating Buddhism throughout the Indian subcontinent. Historical sources The Dipavamsa and the Mahavamsa, Sri Lanka's two great religious chronicles, contain accounts of Mahinda travelling to Sri Lanka and converting King Devanampiya Tissa. Mahinda College
Mahinda College is a Buddhist boys' school in Galle, Sri Lanka. The school was established on 1 March 1892 by the Buddhist Theosophical Society led by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. As of today it is a National school (Sri Lanka), national school which provides primary and secondary education across 13 grades to a student population of around 3200. History Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, a retired United States army officer, came across a report of Panadurawadaya, a religious debate between Buddhist monks and Christian clergy. He began to correspond with the Buddhist monks of Ceylon, eventually leading him to visit Ceylon. Olcott arrived on 17 May 1880 with H. P. Blavatsky, Helena Blavatsky in Galle, where they converted to Buddhism at the Wijeyananda temple.
