Mahapatra or Mohapatra or Mahapatro () is originally a Hindu family surname belonging to the Indian states of Odisha. This surname can be found among the Utkala Brahmins and Karana community of Odisha. Social Status and Confusions Often Odia Mahapatro or Mahapatra Brahmins are confused with Kattaha Brahmins (also known as Maha Brahmins or Mahapatra) outside Odisha. While Kattaha Mahapatra Brahmins engage in Funeral Activities, Odia Mahapatro/ Mahapatra Brahmins are authorised to conduct ''Yagna'' and other Vedic rituals. Jayanta Mahapatra
Jayanta Mahapatra (22 October 1928 – 27 August 2023) was an Indian poet. He is the first Indian poet to win a Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry. He was the author of poems such as "Indian Summer" and "Hunger", which are regarded as classics in modern Indian English literature. He was awarded a Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour in India in 2009, but he returned the award in 2015 to protest against rising intolerance in India. Early life and education Jayanta Mahapatra was born on 22 October 1928 into a prominent Odia Christian family. He attended Stewart School in Cuttack, Odisha. He completed his M. Sc. in Physics from Patna University, Bihar. He began his teaching career as a lecturer in physics in 1949 and taught at various government colleges in Odisha including Gangadhar Meher University, B.J.B College, Fakir Mohan University and Ravenshaw University. Sitakant Mahapatra
Sitakant Mahapatra (born 17 September 1937) is an Indian poet and literary critic in Odia as well as English. He served in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from 1961 until he retired in 1995, and has held ''ex officio'' posts such as the Chairman of National Book Trust, New Delhi since then. He has published over 15 poetry collection, 5 essay collections, a travelogue, over 30 contemplative works, apart from numerous translations. His poetry collection has been published in several Indian languages. His notable works are, ''Sabdar Akash'' (1971) (The Sky of Words), ''Samudra'' (1977) and ''Anek Sharat'' (1981). He was awarded the 1974 Sahitya Akademi Award in Odia for his poetry collection, ''Sabdara Akasha'' (The Sky of Words). Manmohan Mahapatra
Manmohan Mahapatra (10 November 1951 – 13 January 2020) was an Odia language, Odia filmmaker, director, producer, and writer. He won eight consecutive national film awards for his films ''Nishita Swapna'', ''Majhi Pahacha'', ''Klanta Aparanha'', ''Neeraba Jhada'', ''Seeta Raati'', and ''Bhinna Samaya'', among others. His first film ''Seeta Raati'' made in 1976 was the first Odia film to be screened at international film festival in 1982. On 13 January 2020, Mahapatra died in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar at age 68 after battling prolonged kidney and heart ailments . Manmohan Mahapatra is the recipient of India's highly prestigious award Padma Shri 2020 for his work in the field of art. Nityananda Mohapatra
Nityananda Mahapatra (17 June 1912 – 17 April 2012) was an Indian Odia politician, poet and journalist. Political career He was imprisoned three times by the British Raj between 1930 and 1942 for nationalist activities. He came to literary prominence as editor of the Odia magazine ''Dagara'', and as a short story writer after independence. In his political career Mohapatra served as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from 1957 to 1971 and as state Minister of Supply and Cultural Affairs from 1967 to 1971. Death He died on 17 April 2012 at around 9:45am at Kharavelanagar, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from complications of respiratory failure. Sidhant Mohapatra (born 4 May 1966), popularly known as Munna Bhai, is an Indian actor and politician primarily working in Odia cinema, with appearances in Telugu and Tamil films. Known as the "Dynamic Superstar" by his fans for his versatility in acting, comedy, and action, he has acted in over 200 films, with 180 of them in lead roles. Jadumani Mahapatra (alternatively spelled ''Mohapatra''; Jadumaṇi Mahāpātra, ; 1781–1866) also known as ''Utkala Ghanta'' was an Odia language poet, humorist and satirist, who was principal poet during the rule of King Vinayak Singh Mandhata of Nayagarh princely state in present day Odisha. Karan (caste)
The Karan or Karana is a community found in the state of Odisha in India. The post of Karana used to be a professional designation that was occupied by literate peoples. They held Karanam posts in some parts of Andhra Pradesh, where they speak Odia language, Odia and played a similar role in Odisha to that of the Kayasthas of West Bengal and Bihar. Shantanu Mohapatra
Shantanu Mohapatra (1936–2020) was an Indian musician, singer and composer. Apart from Odia, he sang in Hindi and Bengali language. He also directed music for Odia, Bengali, Hindi and Telugu films. During his lifetime, he composed music for more than 1,600 songs. Early life Shantanu Mohapatra was born on 6 January 1936, in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. From the age of five, he learned music from Guru Banchhanidhi Panda. He began performing on stage at the age of eight. In 1956, he graduated from IIT Kharagpur with a degree in Applied Geology and Geophysics. Kelucharan Mohapatra
Kelucharan Mohapatra (8 January 1926 – 7 April 2004) was a legendary Indian classical dancer, guru, and exponent of Odissi dance, who is credited with the revival and popularizing of this classical dance form in the 20th century. He is the first person to receive the Padma Vibhushan from Odisha. Kattaha Brahmin
The Kattaha Brahmins (also known as Maha Brahmins or Mahapatra ), are a Hindu caste found in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar in India. They are basically a priestly community who primarily perform death rites and are the traditional funeral priests of North India.
