Mahakali Irrigation Project
Mahakali Irrigation Project is one of the National Pride Projects of Nepal. Water from Mahakali river at Sarada barrage is diverted to irrigate the farms in Nepal side as per the Mahakali treaty. The command area lies in Kanchanpur and Kailali districts. The headworks of the project is Sharada Barrage, which was constructed in 1928 by the British-Indian government. The main canal of the project was constructed in 1975 with command area of 3,400. In 1976, International Development Association agreed for financing the project and an agreement was signed on September 29, 1980, with an implementation period of 5 years. The first Stage was completed in 1988. The second stage, was signed on November 18, 1988, between Nepal and the International Development Association. It was completed in 1997. Sharda River
The Sharda River, also called Kali River and Mahakali River, originates at Kalapani in the Himalayas at an elevation of in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, India. It flows along Nepal's western border with India and has a basin area of . It joins Ghaghra River, a tributary of the Ganges. It takes the name Kali River from the union of the two streams at Gunji as it flows through the hills. After Brahmadev Mandi near Tanakpur, it enters the Terai plains, where it is called Sharda River. It offers potential for hydroelectric power generation. The river is also proposed as source for one of the many projects in the Himalayan component of the Indian Rivers Inter-link project. Mahakali Treaty
Mahakali Treaty or महाकाली सन्धि (''Mahakali Sandhi'') is an agreement between the Government of Nepal (former ''His Majesty's Government of Nepal'') and the Government of India regarding the development of watershed of Mahakali River. The treaty was signed in 1996. The treaty has 12 articles agreements for an integrated development of barrage, dams and hydropower for mutual cooperation of the two countries by managing the water resources. The treaty recognizes the Mahakali River as a boundary river between the two countries. Historic development In 1920, the Indo Nepal water treaty was signed by the British Raj to build the Sarda barrage to irrigate the United Province. This treaty is referred to as the Sarada Treaty. In the treaty, Nepal government agreed to give 4093.88 acres of land on the eastern banks of Mahakali river for the construction.
