Maha Bodhi School
Kampong Ubi, also known as Ubi Estate, is a subzone located in the planning area of Geylang in the Central Region of Singapore. It lies within a somewhat rhombic piece of land bounded by Airport Road at the north, the Pan-Island Expressway at the south, Eunos Link at the east and Paya Lebar Road at the west. The area was formerly a Malay village. Etymology and early history The Malay word ''Ubi'' refers to the tapioca plant. Malays used to grow small tapioca farms in the area. Kampong Ubi ( Jawi: كامڤوڠ اوبي) was a rather large village even for its time. The first settlements began at the junction of Jalan Ubi and Changi Road, and quickly expanded northwards to the areas designated as the Kampong Ubi subzone today. All the roads and side-lanes within the kampong were named after vegetables, e.g. Jalan Kobis (cabbage), Jalan Bayam (spinach), Jalan Tauge (bean sprouts) as these areas used to have many of these plants. Geylang
Geylang () is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west. Geylang is previously known as a red-light district, particularly the areas along Geylang Road. Today only 3-4 units remain for brothels and street walkers are hard to come by. Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is located. During Ramadan, the neighbourhood is famous for its popular and iconic Ramadan lights and bazaars. The Downtown Line (DTL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. It runs from Bukit Panjang MRT/LRT station, Bukit Panjang station in the north-west of the country towards Expo MRT station, Expo station in the east via a loop around the Central Area, Singapore, city-centre. Ubi MRT Station
Ubi MRT station ( ) is an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the Downtown Line (DTL). Located in Geylang planning area, Singapore, the station is near the junction of Ubi Avenue 1 and Ubi Avenue 2. The station serves mainly industrial workers, and residents, in and around the Kampong Ubi estate. The word ''Ubi'' refers to ”tapioca” in Malay. The Ngee Ann Kongsi () is a Charitable organization, charitable foundation in Singapore and governed by the Ngee Ann Kongsi Ordinance of 1933. It is one of many Overseas Chinese Kongsi, or clan associations, that were set up by immigrants from China in the late 19th century. The foundation's name, Ngee Ann, is the old name for Chaozhou, which may also be transliterated as Chaozhou, Teochew. The Teochew people reside in the eastern part of Guangdong province, China, a distinct racial group sharing the province with other communities such as the Cantonese people, Cantonese and Hakka people, Hakka people. The Ngee Ann Kongsi was founded in 1845 by Seah Eu Chin to look after the religious and humanitarian needs of Teochew immigrants in Singapore. Build To Order (HDB)
Build to order (BTO) is a real estate development scheme enacted by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), a statutory board responsible for Singapore's public housing. First introduced in 2001, it was a flat allocation system that offered flexibility in timing and location for owners buying new public housing in the country. Under the scheme, Singaporeans select and apply for an apartment in their preferred location(s) from a list of launch sites. Originally, a tender for construction would be called only if the number of applicants is at least 70% of the number of apartments in a specific contract (50% since 2011), otherwise, the project would not be built. Manjusri Secondary School
Manjusri Secondary School (MJR) is a co-educational government-aided secondary school in Ubi, Singapore. Named after the bodhisattva Manjusri, it was established by the Singapore Buddhist Federation in 1982 and affiliated to two primary schools: Mee Toh School and Maha Bodhi School. School history The school was set up by the Singapore Buddhist Federation in 1982 at 149 Sims Drive, Singapore 387380. In 2009, the school moved to a new campus at 20 Ubi Avenue 1 which was officially opened on 22 April 2010.
