Magritte Awards
A Magritte Award (, ) is an accolade presented by the Académie André Delvaux of Belgium to recognize cinematic achievement in the film industry. Modelled after the French César Award, the formal ceremony at which the awards are presented is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in Belgium. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette. The awards, first presented in 2011, are considered the Belgian equivalent of the Academy Awards in the United States. Historically given during the first quarter of the new year, the awards honor achievements for cinematic accomplishments for the preceding year. The Académie André Delvaux is a Belgium, Belgian professional organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of Cinema of Belgium, Belgian cinema. Founded in 2010, it is responsible for the annual Magritte Awards, Belgium's principal film awards. History The Académie André Delvaux was founded by two associations: the Francophone Film Producers Association (UPFF), represented by Patrick Quinet, Marion Hänsel, Olivier Bronckart and Philippe Kauffmann, and the association of authors Pro Spère, represented by Luc Jabon, André Buytaers, Benoît Coppée and Alok Nandi. Its name was chosen in honour of the Belgian film director André Delvaux (1926–2002). The academy aims to promote the Belgian film industry around the globe. Jaco Van Dormael
Jaco Van Dormael (born 9 February 1957) is a Belgium, Belgian film director, screenwriter and playwright. His films especially focus on a respectful and sympathetic portrayal of people with mental and physical disability, disabilities. Van Dormael spent his childhood travelling around Europe, before going on to study filmmaking at the INSAS (film school), INSAS in Brussels, where he wrote and directed his first short film, ''Maedeli la brèche'' (1981), which received the Honorary Foreign Film Award at the Student Academy Awards. Van Dormael's feature debut, ''Toto the Hero, Toto le héros'' (1991), won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The single transferable vote (STV) or proportional-ranked choice voting (P-RCV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which each voter casts a single vote in the form of a ranked ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternative preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated or elected with surplus votes, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. STV aims to approach proportional representation based on votes cast in the district where it is used, so that each vote is worth about the same as another. Instant Run-off Voting
Instant-runoff voting (IRV; ranked-choice voting (RCV), preferential voting, alternative vote) is a single-winner ranked voting election system where one or more eliminations are used to simulate runoff elections. When no candidate has a majority of the votes in the first round of counting, each following round eliminates the candidate with the fewest first-preferences (among the remaining candidates) and transfers their votes if possible. This continues until one candidate accumulates a majority of the votes still in play. Instant-runoff voting falls under the plurality-based voting-rule family, in that under certain conditions the candidate with the least votes is eliminated, making use of secondary rankings as contingency votes. The 66th Cannes Film Festival took place from 15 to 26 May 2013. American filmmaker Steven Spielberg was the Jury President for the main competition.
