Jon Brion (born December 11, 1963) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and composer. He performed with the Excerpts, the Bats, 'Til Tuesday and The Grays (band), the Grays before becoming an established producer and film score composer. Brion has produced music for artists and bands including Of Montreal, Aimee Mann, Love Jones (band), Love Jones, Eels (band), Eels, Fiona Apple, Elliott Smith, Robyn Hitchcock, Rhett Miller, The Crystal Method, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Sky Ferreira and Mac Miller. According to ''Stereogum,'' Brion's work on Mann's first solo albums "lay the groundwork for a sound that became synonymous with a strain of notable alternative acts at the turn of the century". ''Meaningless'' is the debut solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Jon Brion, released in 2001. Initially slated for release on Lava Records, the album was ultimately released independently by Brion on his own "Straight to Cut-Out" label, sold through his website and CD Baby. After being widely unavailable and obscure due to its limited release, in 2022 the album received its first wide release and first pressing on vinyl through Jealous Butcher Records. Critical reception Jason Damas of AllMusic observed the influence of Brion's past collaborators, particularly Aimee Mann, in the album's music, while noting that "in reality it is a representation of the purest form of what Brion has given to the production of those other artists' work". He deemed ''Meaningless'' to be "a lovely, catchy, and personal pop album on par with (and in many cases, superior to) the albums and artists that he has worked with in the past". ''Magnolia'' is a 1999 American drama film written, directed and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. Aimee Elizabeth Mann (born September 8, 1960) is an American singer-songwriter. Over the course of four decades, she has released ten studio albums as a solo artist. She is noted for her sardonic and literate lyrics about dark subjects, often describing underdog characters. Her work with the producer Jon Brion in the 1990s was influential on American alternative rock. Mann was born in Richmond, Virginia, and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In the 1980s, after playing with the the Young Snakes, Young Snakes and Ministry (band), Ministry, she co-founded the New wave music, new wave band 'Til Tuesday and wrote their top-ten single "Voices Carry" (1985).
