Magic Management
Magic Management was a music management company that managed Canadian acts such as Jay Telfer, Truck, Christopher Kearney, Terry Dee and The Good Bros. during the 1970s. They also managed English group Hit & Run which was based in Toronto. They became involved with an exercise involving Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to encourage young people to vote. They became one of the few music-related companies at the time who were able to incorporate management and creative requirements for their acts. Their subsidiary Slic Brothers was nominated three times for a Juno Award in the mid-1970s. Background Described as a group of companies, they operated on several fronts. In 1972, Magic Management was also a division of the Toronto-based company, Truck Music Ltd. Truck Music Limited also handled the PR work for some acts on their level. Jay Telfer
Jay Telfer (December 22, 1947 - May 20, 2009) was a Canadian singer/songwriter and guitarist. Early life Telfer grew up in Toronto and learned to play drums as a child. Career In the 1960s Telfer was the lead singer for the band A Passing Fancy. In 1968, as a solo musician, he released a single, ''Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness''. Telfer performed with the Steel River band and wrote their song "Ten Pound Note" which was on the RPM Top 50 Canadian chart in July 1970. Telfer wrote the score for the film ''Away the Lines'', which featured Burl Ives. Lighthouse (band)
Lighthouse is a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, Ontario, whose repertoire included elements of rock music, jazz, classical music, and swing and featured horns, string instruments, and vibraphone. They won Juno Awards for Best Canadian Group of the Year in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Band history Formation Lighthouse was formed in 1968 in Toronto by vocalist/drummer Skip Prokop, previously of the Paupers, and keyboardist Paul Hoffert. The two met on a flight from New York City to Toronto, and discussed forming a band structured around a rock rhythm section, jazz horn section, and classical string section. Axe Records is a Canadian record label founded by Greg Hambleton in 1972. After a number of years of inactivity, the label was revived in 2013. It is particularly notable as the original recording label of Canadian duo Gary and Dave. History Axe Records was founded by Greg Hambleton in 1972. Domenic Troiano
Domenic Michele Antonio Troiano (January 17, 1946 – May 25, 2005) was a Canadian guitarist and songwriter, best known as a member of Mandala, Bush, James Gang, and The Guess Who. He also recorded music for film and television, often made guest appearances on other musicians' albums, and worked as a producer. Biography Troiano was born in Modugno, Italy, and his family emigrated to Toronto, Ontario during his childhood. He became a Canadian citizen in 1955. His first professional music work was in the early 1960s with a band fronted by Ronnie Hawkins. In 1965 Troiano joined a local Toronto band called the Five Rogues, which later found success as Mandala. The band achieved several hit singles in Canada, and played several times in the United States. Mandala disbanded in 1969, after which Troiano and some of the other members formed the new band Bush. Shawne Jackson is a singer, songwriter from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She had a Canadian Top 10 hit in 1974 with "Just As Bad As You". Michael Curtis (musician)
Michael Curtis is a musician and composer. He was also a member of These Vizitors consisting of his family members, The Curtis Brothers, Crazy Horse, Buffalo Springfield Again, the Byrds with Gene Clark, and later with Hoyt Axton. He also co-wrote the hit "Southern Cross" with Steve Stills, which was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. It had originally been "Seven League Boots" written with brother Rick. Brian Wray
Brian Wray was a veteran Canadian musician and musical arranger. He had been a member of three major Canadian bands, Natural Gas in the late 1960s, Motherlode and Truck in the early 1970s. He also worked with Lisa Hartt, Freedom North, Moe Koffman, David Johannesson and other artists. In later years he moved more towards the jazz genre. Background Born Brian Francis Wray, coming from Montreal, he was an organ & piano player. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. ''RPM'' stood for "Records, Promotion, Music". The magazine's title varied over the years, including ''RPM Weekly'' and ''RPM Magazine''. Canadian music charts ''RPM'' maintained several format charts, including Top Singles (all genres), Adult Contemporary, Dance, Urban, Rock/Alternative and Country Tracks (or Top Country Tracks) for country music. Ronald Harry "Skip" Prokop (December 13, 1943 – August 30, 2017) was a Canadian drummer, guitarist and keyboardist. He was also a band leader, was a founding member of the Canadian rock music groups the Paupers and Lighthouse. Early life Prokop was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He attended G.L. Armstrong elementary and Hill Park secondary schools.
